I have an "impressive" injury!

Recommended Posts

Turns out my foot has been broken for the past 12+ weeks! Yep, that loosing battle with the gopher hole back in June did more than just sprain my ankle. Turns out my calcaneus (heel) has been broken this entire time! :o

How can this be? Well, it didn't hurt and didn't really show up on the x-rays. I've been going to PT for my ankle sprain the entire time and got clearance to start running again a couple weeks ago. I was actually excited about being allowed to run ONE whole mile. The thing is I don't like to run, but I was so tired of being confined to sitting on my ass that I was actually looking forward to it.

When I ran the first time my ankle was sore. It was to be expected, but my foot also popped in a place that I didn't know it could pop. Didn't hurt just felt weird. I tried running again a few days later and got the same result. The next day I was walking around in my socks and my foot started popping again. Weird.[:/] I told my physical therapist about it the next day. He was concerned about it and referred me to a podiatrist.

The doc looked at the same follow up x-rays that had been taken 2 weeks after my injury (which the report said were negative) and says "I'm suspicious there is a fracture right here, but its hard to tell because its at a cuboid-calcaneus joint. Lets get another x-ray at a different angle."

So what's he say when we take a look at the new image? "Impressive!" Apparently the way I broke my foot isn't very easy to do. I've been walking around like this for 3 months now and what does he do? Makes me start wearing one of those stoooopid terminator boot thingies. No running and no more PT. I of course ask if I can still skydive and he said yes! I like him. I like him a lot! I've been jumping for the past month anyway so what's a few more right? >:( He said I could and who am I to argue with a doctor?:)

So what's the solution? I'm having surgery in a week to either have the broken piece removed or a pin put in. I told him that if I don't need it and it isn't going to affect the function of my foot, just remove the fucker. I'd much rather recover in a couple of weeks than in a couple of months!

I took a big climbing whipper years ago and broke both heels. When the CT scans came back the doc said "You've got an old break with a piece of bone loose." I had broken my foot the same as you have only never had it looked at and the piece never knit. It's still floating around in there.

I used to have a frequent flyer card to the orthopedic clinic so my regular doc jokes with me but when he said we'd be fusing the ankle I told him "No we won't!" So far so good. No surgery. It hurts a lot but not worth going in to fuse now. Arthritis from effing up the cartilage is what has become bothersome.

Back about '88 I was jumping a Mavarick that opened pretty abruptly. On this particular jump, it felt like I jumped off a bridge with kevlar instead of bungee. I heard my neck make odd cracking noises and my right arm was no longer useful. I landed one handed and the arm was still really tingleing. 2 days later it still tingled so I went to the chiropractor. He took some X-rays. I was sitting there in the exam room when he walks in with the X-rays and says, "When did you break your neck?" I got really still, didn't want to move a mucsle. He says no, it's OK, it must have happened a long time ago. He shows me the pictures and there is one long irregular vertibrae where there should be 3. C 3, 4, & 5 I think. They had all grown together over the years and if they had still been normal there would've been enough flexibility to bend and break. WOW!!

A few days later, I remembered an event from childhood. I was 5 or 6 and was showing off (Yeah, even then) seeing how far I could jump from the swing set. I could swing the highest so I could jump the farthest. Except that I swung so high I wound up getting out of the swing backwards. I came down square on my head, luckily and had a REALLY stiff neck for a while. That must have been when it happened. It may also explain a lot about the rest of my life. "He fell on his head as a child." :)
