RALFFERS 0 #1 November 21, 2007 Can you guys give me your opinion on the subject of this thread? I realize that more people lurk the bonfire more than any other forum, hence the link here. On top of having fun, I have also learned a lot here, and there's no reason that should stop now Please keep all coments in the original thread. Squeak 17 #6 November 22, 2007 Hey Ralf. A guy i know has CP, complete with gimpy legs and arms, and speach impediment. He has a brain that works better than most. he always wanted to be a stand up Comedian, lots of people put him down and told him it won't work. he pretty much told them to screw themselves and went and tried it anyways. Throughout the late 80's and early 90's he enjoyed great sucess as a stand up comic called "Steady Eddy". (he toured the states, but they didn't get his humour they thought he was an able bodied dude making fun of people with CP dickheads ) So i say to you Ralf, Screw all the neh sayers, and go for it. the worst that can happen is you end up where you are now. the best that can happen is you strengthen you legs and core muscles and learn to skydive. I know several legless jumpers one or 2 armless jumpers, and plenty of able bodies jumpers who are reatrded in some other way. Fill ya boots brother and have fun pissing off those who would stand in your way You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! How's yours doing? This just ain't the right place to find people who know anything about it. Errr, 'terrible disease'???? Firstly, CP is NOT a disease. By calling it as such puts a really negative light on it. Secondly, the only terrible thing about being disabled is the lack of provision by society. And that includes individuals attitudes. As for the rest of your post, I was interested enough to respond to Ralf and the info I gave was useful to him. It seems that I'm not the only one either. Just because you're not interested, doesn't mean that anyone else shouldn't be.Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes

Ripple 0 #12 November 22, 2007 Firstly, he's a skydiver, he posted on the Skydivers with Disabilities board about a problem that is linked to exactly those two things - skydiving and being disabled. He linked to it here, because quite rightly, he assessed that people who could help him wouldn't necessarily look at the Skydivers with Disabilities board. But all that is completely irrelevant; how many people post asking advice on matters that have absolutely nothing to do with skydiving whatsoever on DZ.com????/ Yourself included. Well done in not addressing my other point, not that I expected you to.Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes

When you grow up and look at the accomplishments people make who have had challenges in their life and see just how hard they have worked compared to others then your words and thoughts might mean something. As of now they don't. This is a skydiving forum and where else would he get the answers he is looking for but here. He wants to fly in a tunnel and possible skydive. I think this is the right area to ask the questions he has. JohnRich 4 #16 November 22, 2007 Sheesh! We sure have a bunch of people spoiling for a fight here, and none of them is me. I'm responding to everyone in this one post. In my first message, #2, I simply suggested that he would get a better response if he actually mentioned the actual subject matter for which he was seeking help, in the title of the thread, or in the text of his message. He did neither. That's simply wise common-sense advice for posting in a public forum. My second message, #4, was in response to his despair that he wasn't getting any feedback in this forum. Again, I simply suggested with common-sense advice that a better place to find out about the capabilities of people with cerebral palsy would be a forum dedicated to that subject, and not a skydiving web site, where there are likely to be relatively few people with that affliction, or knowledge of it. All I have to do is type three words into Google to find more closely targeted forums for that subject: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=cerebral+palsy+forum&btnG=Google+Search Oh lookie! How about this one: Cerebral palsy and sports If you want to fight with someone over the definition of "disease", you'll have to do it with someone else. It's irrelevant here for the purpose of this thread. So sue me for not being a medical doctor. Re: "Just because you're not interested, doesn't mean that anyone else shouldn't be."I never said that I wasn't interested, nor did I say that no one else should be either. I was trying to help him post in a way that would generate more interest, or to direct him to place where he could find more interest. Re: "how many people post asking advice on matters that have absolutely nothing to do with skydiving whatsoever on DZ.com????"Again, you're trying to pick a fight over something I never said. Re: "Well done in not addressing my other point, not that I expected you to."I ignored it, because it was irrelevant to this discussion, and, unlike you, I wasn't looking for a fight. You were correct, it's not a "disease". There, do you feel much better now? Re: "Just stop! You are trying to cause a problem and stir things up. When you grow up... blah blah blah... Stop being an ass... blah blah blah..."No, I wasn't trying to cause a problem, I was trying to help. I'm plenty grown up, thank you. And thank you for the personal insult. Someone complained about an apparent absence of moderators - well, lucky for you, because when they see that comment, you'll get your wrist slapped. Pardon fucking me for trying to help. Happy fucking Thanksgiving to all of you.

Andy9o8 2 #24 November 23, 2007 You know, in all fairness, guys, I see people come in here all the time asking for specialized medical, or pharmaceutical, or legal advice. And I, too, can't help but think, "Why on Earth ask for that kind of advice in a recreational forum like this one?" Sometimes I even give voice to that thought: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3010305#3010305 What floors me even more is when non-doctors, non-lawyers, etc., who'd probably be the first to say "ask your instructor" to a student's skydiving question, actually presume to give that kind of advice: "Well, I've got to believe that (insert guess disguised as knowledge here)", and it just makes me shake my head with wonder. Reading, and re-reading John's posts in this thread, I don't see anything more than that, or that warranted such a flame-fest.
kbordson 8 #25 November 23, 2007 QuoteYou know, in all fairness, guys, I see people come in here all the time asking for specialized medical, or pharmaceutical, or legal advice. And I, too, can't help but think, "Why on Earth ask for that kind of advice in a recreational forum like this one?" I agree that sometimes there might be some posts where you truly wonder if this is the right forum to look for information, but it might be a place to start looking. Maybe someone might be able to help with a website or there might be some specialized knowledge here that might help. For example - pregnancy and skydiving. IF you ask your ob/gyn, the answer will be be "don't do it." Plain and simple. But with no understanding on the whys or the real complications... just "don't do it." By asking some of the skydiving doctors that have taken in interest in those topics, you are better educated to make an informed decision on what you choose to do. And even if it might be against recommendations, at least you understand the risks better. Same theory with CP and skydiving. Personally I have a limited understanding of the restrictions with CP (that is not my speciality which is why I haven't replied earlier) but there might be someone with that knowldege on this forum. Additionally, the recommendations might change depending on his individual needs.... but if he wanted to just talk with his doctor about it... he might just get the "don't do it." response. As opposed to going in and saying - "I've done some research" (NOT citing JUST this fourm, but others ones that might have more medical info - ie www.pubmed.com) "and was wondering if...." So, is it proper to ask medical or specialized advice on this forum? I think that, understanding that you might get what you pay for, it is a place to ask if anyone knows anything about.....
