Who was the idiot that creamed into six spectators in UTAH?

Recommended Posts

CNN) — A motorized parachute crashed into a crowd at a Labor Day festival in Hooper, Utah, injuring at least six people including children, authorities said.

The parachute was operated by a man and his son who were both on the aircraft, but neither was injured when it dropped to the ground amid spectators.

Scores of people had gathered Monday for what was to have been a candy drop from the motorized parachute, according to Lt. Lonnie Eskelson of the Weber County, Utah, Sheriff’s Department. Video from the incident showed the small craft in the air, approaching the crowd, when it quickly lost altitude and came down as spectators ran for safety.

Six people were taken to are hospitals, including two sisters, 4 and 5 years old, authorities said. The 5-year-old was being treated Monday night at Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, for a leg fracture, Eskelson said, while her sister was treated and released. A 3-year-old also was being treated at the center Monday night. The other injured spectators were treated and released, Eskelson said.

Why did it just go down like that? did he stall?

Aren't you supposed to apply some "brake" at the same time you apply throttle in order to get a powered glider to climb????

it did not stall, and he did not apply the brakes. i'm wondering if he's even allowed to fly over spectators in the first place. would this event be more like a demo, where you can't fly your canopy over spectators under a certain altutude, or like a day at the dz?

The news piece I heard last night said that the wind was a factor in why he lost control and hit the spectators. Was that not the case?

Whatever the case is, its on the TV news. I was just sitting here at work and heard the screams from the kids ( yes, they played that part) from the TV in our control room. I got asked alot of questions about it, because nobody here knows anything about parachuting.. but.. i dont know thaaat much either.. just that this kind of act is unacceptable in our world! >:(

Wow! why couldn't he have his passenger drop the candy. And since when is it a good idea to fly anything over a crowd of people. For goodness sakes when we fly anything at an RC airfield we don't even fly our little foam ones over people much less the 40lbs ones. We do candy drops to but knowone can go out until the craft that dropped the candy has landed someplace else. He is lucky he didn't kill anyone!

reguardless of wind, when you are heading towards the ground too fast, you flair. i really hope he publicly tells his side of the story.

i bet he didn't file a NOTAM....;)

silly sort of thing to be doing, in the first place...:S one could stand ON THE GROUND,,, and toss candy to a crowd...:|

to dump it on them from the air, is asking for trouble....[:/]

I've seen a few people who buy these rigs,,, Often from someone ELSE, ( who only flew it 3 or 4 times,, and had the crap scared outta them ) have not very many,,, hours on them, and
sometimes such pilots consider themselves, experts, IF they have 5 hours,,,, and a half a dozen take off and landings...[:/]

anyway. do not really know the experience level of THIS guy,, but his 'common sense ' level is low...

Yep- never underestimate the sheer idiocy of grown men.......

"candy drops" are a common event at fly in's and such, there is also the "accuracy bean bag drop" and the "air parade" where a collection of nubile pilots do repeated fly by's around and around the pattern....that amateur fuckery seems like a fun idea around crowds until someone hay bales it and looses an eye.

One time for kicks we actually practiced shooting a paint ball gun at standup ground targets- from a two place powered parachute when the air field was empty.......the pilot got distracted by the target shooting and nearly left wheel marks on our club trailer[:/].... we promptly parked it and that's the LAST time we tried that foolishness.

The funny part was when the club VP discovered all the broken and paint ball stained targets.....he was like "WTF happened here!!????">:(

That's a negative ghostrider. If you watch the video, you can clearly see the canopy pitch up, and level off just before it dives into the crowd.

Let's remember that a powered parachute is still a parachute. Think about what happens when you apply brakes to your canopy, and then let them up, your canopy dives to recover the lost airpseed.

Tandem instructors do this all the time to 'swoop' their tandems. They go into brakes at 50 or 60 feet, then let them up and use the speed from the resulting dive to get a little swoop from their canopy.

This was poor piloting all the way. At a minimum, he should have held the brakes and added power. He might have been able to climb out of the situation, but if not at least he would have mushed into the crowd nose high with a mostly vertical component as opposed to driving through the crowd with high forward speed.

Having worked in the PPC industry for at the time was the largest company ( Powrachute) i have to say that this incident does not at all suprise me.
While working at the company i saw many wrecked PPC's come back to the shop for repair.
these guys always wanted to be pilots but never did become pilots and they purcahsed a PPC and suddenly found themselves scared and in a panic. I saw one guy go for his first flight from our shop and cart wheel the machine on take off because he ran into a ditch at the end of the property line..... he was not gaining lift on take off so he just kept going accross the ground until he hit the dicth, we sat on 80 acres of land! fing idiot.
And these guys wondered why FAA steped in and made them comply with sport pilot instead of just buying and flying.
