SpeedRacer 1 #5 September 13, 2009 Raptors can be seen migrating south from early September through November. They like to ride the updrafts along the Appalachian mountain range. About 20 minutes' drive from my house is the Washington Monument Park on the Appalachian trail. The monument is a 34 foot high tower built in 1827 on top of the ridge. It was restored in the 1930s & has a winding staircase on the inside. There were a few people up there with binoculars recording how many of each type of raptor they saw. I was up there for about 45 minutes and I saw a bald eagle, an osprey, and right at the end about a dozen broad winged hawks showed up. The experts up there said they had already seen seven bald eagles today. They told me a few tricks to raptor-migration watching: 1) 10X binoculars are about the optimum magnification to use. 2) Don't try to share binoculars, each person should have their own. 3) Optimum conditions are overcast skies, because the dark shapes show up better in front of white clouds than blue sky.
