Tuna-Salad 0 #1 September 14, 2009 So I saw a runway on google earth marked with only an "R" at both ends. I know about left and right runways and center, but have never seen one simply marked with an "R". Anybody know what it means or why?Millions of my potential children died on your daughters' face last night.
AggieDave 6 #2 September 14, 2009 Its an Air-Pirate airport. "Skylane 82-Bravo taking the active..." "Roger, taking active ARrrrrrrrrr..."--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
BillyVance 35 #3 September 14, 2009 I have no idea what the "R" is for. I've seen runways marked with an "X" at both ends on google earth which means they are closed or no longer in use. Maybe the "R" is for retarded pilots... pilotdave 0 #4 September 14, 2009 I don't know but I'm guessing it's a private airport and the R is just a non-standard marking. Maybe the owner's last initial or something. Never heard of R being an official marking. Got a link to it on google maps or something? Dave

Misternatural 0 #7 September 14, 2009 yep...or I was going to say R/C as in radio control runway...I guess it is illegal to share model plane runways with general aviation.Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. In some cases the owner of a private airstrip won't extend an invitation for you to land. This is more often than not an insurance requirement for a private strip. They might say "I can't invite you but I won't turn you away either." The R is also a way to make an airstrip a little easier to swallow for a community concerned about an "airport" opening up in their town. You and I love airplane noise but a lot of folks don't. jon
captain1976 0 #10 September 14, 2009 Plenty or "R's" on the charts but never seen one on a runway. Doesn't matter though, either on a chart or the runway means "Welcome" to me.You live more in the few minutes of skydiving than many people live in their lifetime
