henryvillar 0 #1 September 23, 2009 ...chilled but not freezing. I live in Brazil where due to the climate they tend to enjoy their beer at -2°C. At this temperature the beer loses all flavour, becoming similar to coloured mineral water (pretty much like miller lite and shit like it). The Outback steakhouse here sells the already chilled beer into frozen mugs, so that when it reaches the table, it has basically turned into a beer coloured slush puppy. Fuck that! I like the taste of beer and would rather have it English style (closer to 10°C) than Brazilian style, although this also depends on the type and quality of the brew. How about you? The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of my employer, not necessarily mine, and probably not necessary.

billvon 3,107 #3 September 23, 2009 Depends on the beer! Pilsners are best very cold, IMO. As close to 0C as you can get. Hefeweizens, wits, fruit-based beers (Lost Coast Tangerine for example) are best slightly warmer, say 5C. Barleywines and stouts are best even warmer than that. Call it 10C. There are a very few beers (Sinner's Blend, Angel's Share, Older Vis) that are best near room temperature, around 15C.
shropshire 0 #4 September 23, 2009 Daft question. It depends upon the type of beer! (.)Y(.) Chivalry is not dead; it only sleeps for want of work to do. - Jerome K Jerome

(Bud light, etc don't count as beer. They are piss water - and in order to reduce the taste as much as possible, they should be drank as cold as possible)
Phosphorus8 0 #6 September 23, 2009 I have got to admit that I have never taken the temperature of my beer! Usually doesn't stick around that long! "Well behaved women rarely make history" - Marilyn Monroe
henryvillar 0 #7 September 23, 2009 Indeed it does! However you will find that 99% of beer drinkers around the world don't know the difference between a lager and a pils, top fermented or bottom fermented, etc. They will therefore have a preferred serving temperature, regardless of the type. Just think how many people drink Miller Lite. Shows how many people drink "beer" even though they probably dont like the flavour. If they drank sparkling water it would have the same flavour, be healthier and probably be cheaper. billvon 3,107 #8 September 23, 2009 >But right at freezing is too cold for any beer, IMNSHO. Have you had any really good pilseners or kolschs? I think they're best really, really cold. They seem to lose something when they warm up - as opposed to most other beers, where you start tasting more as they warm.

I happen to know the difference between beers and like lots of different kinds... personally like stouts (Milk Stout by Left Hand Brew. Co.) and porters (Black Butte Porter by Dechutes Brew. Co.) the best, also a lot of Belgian whites and English ales... However I'll take a Miller Lite over most IPAs... and a cold miller tastes good at the end of a hot day."Damn you Gravity, you win again"
LongWayToFall 0 #14 September 23, 2009 I'm drinking a fat tire right now, and the bottle says serve at 7C, 45F. This is for an amber ale. Mmmmmm

billvon 3,107 #17 September 24, 2009 >Any recommendations for a really good one? The only really good local one that I've tried is Elemental Pilsner by Lightning. Port makes a Panzer Imperial Pilsner that's OK but not great. "Imperial" usually means "more of everything" and a pilsner is not a good beer to overload (IMO.) I've heard good things about Reality Czech, Live Oak Pilz and Braumeister though.
