1080p vs 720p, Plasma vs LCD..

Recommended Posts

Ok, so i'm in the market for a new tv, should be easy but apparently it isn't.

I'm not going to put any stats in here, i've done a lot of reading around, i just wondered what everyone thinks is the best way to go and what's good out there for reasonable money

If it's 42 or larger 1080p.

Plasma kills LCD in contrast.*

LCD kills plasma in brightness.*

LED TVs are pretty much the best of both worlds.

You can usually find some killer deals online. I just picked up an LG 42" 1080p LCD for around $899 shipped from TigerDirect.

*In most cases

1080p LCD.... If you're not going for the new cool shit, LED...
Philips has a new cool thing, the cinema format (21:9) LCD TV (probably not just Philips but that one is the only one I've been reading about and I'm too lazy to do search)

It all depends...

1080 vs 720 boils down to the size of the tv vs the distance you sit from it. 1080 allows you to use a larger screen at the same distance without seeing distortion. Past a certain distance/size the difference is negligible.

I'm a plasma fan for the deep black levels and lack of ghosting. But, they are heavier, hotter, use more energy, and have problems with ambient light being reflected off the glass.

LCD are lighter, more efficient, available in wider range of sizes. Only the top range models are able to compete with mid range plasmas for black levels. fast moving objects can cause ghosting images (120hz is BS marketing gimmick), more expensive in the larger sizes than plasma.

Burned in images is really not an issue on modern panels, both have very long lifespans. They both have their own issues with reproducing certain colors (I believe plasmas have a harder time with and LCDs with red but don't quote me on it)

Also take a look at Samsung's DLP with LED... they aren't wall mountable but still pretty small. And can be bought in much larger sizes for less money.

For plasma I suggest Panasonic and Kuro is the top of the line models. For LCD I prefer Samsung for LCDs (something with LED backlighting for any LCD though will help with the black levels, some times they are called LED TVs but they are still LCDs.)

Of course if your on a tight budget, get a cheap Vizio LCD and don't do any research :P

Edit to add: Contrast ratios used to be a good quality indicator but those have been fudged with the "Dynamic contrast" into more marketing BS. Also don't bother looking at tvs in a store... they mess with the settings to make whatever tv they want to sell that month look the best.

>LED TVs are pretty much the best of both worlds.

As a note, LED TV's are LCD TV's with different backlights. They use discrete LED's instead of CCFL's to backlight the screen. The better LED TV's do individual dimming of the backlight LED's to enhance contrast ratio.

(There are true LED TV's, but they are not sold to consumers currently.)

well, i'm not a tv head so i won't spend a fortune, put it this way, i don't expect i'll wear it out with over viewing whatever i buy, i have seen some lcd screens that lok very 'misty' lacking in contrast which i am not sure if that is mostly to do with their setup or simply the nature of some lcds, this is what led me to think about plasma, i certainly don't mind the tv being a mini radiator, winter is on the way!

Hang out wait till after the super bowl the prices usually crash the day after the big game.
Basically LED is the latest and greatest thing out there.
LCD (which I have) looks great if your cable company can give you 1080P if it's pumping out 720P or under it looks a little strange at times. I hear Plasma does a better job with the lower resolutions.

Also set aside about $150 for mounting your new 60in of sweet sweet loving to the wall!

Only advice I can offer is to NOT get the shiny screen... nothing worse than dropping a bit o'cash on something that reflects all the lights in the room. My 47" has the anti-glare coating and I couldn't be happier with it. It's an LG btw... 1080dpi, 120hz, 6hdmi slots, and an intel sensor that adjusts the brightness to the ambient light levels of the room. YMMV, but it makes the wifey happy so I guess that makes me happier by default.
Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...

Yup. I did see a Sony 11" oled for sale a few months back, but it was a little small for $1500. Nice picture though.

well the room it's going in is 14 feet wide so i think 60inches would maybe be a bit overkill.

i don't want to be able to see each one of those 1080 pixels individually!

This could be you!

But again depends on what your cable box is spitting out.
My box is a mixed bag. Some come in 1080p and others don't.
And remember when you are at the store all those TV's are hooked up to a very high end 1080P source.

Well the misty is a "feature":S of lcd but it is also likely that it didn't help that it wasn't set properly.

Might I suggest the Panasonic TC - P46S1 just doing a quick search of current models this would be the one I buy (without taking special sales into consideration) for ~$1,000 online. I bought my TV in the end of '07 and it was a 42" 1080p Panasonic plasma for ~$1400 (was one of the first 1080 plasmas)

edit to add: my plasma has an anti-glare coating which slightly takes away from the picture but makes a big difference since I have LOTS of windows in my living room. at night it is only a negative. I didn't look to see if the P46S1 has the same coating or not. Overall I've been very happy with my tv (other than the $600 price drop for the next model up 6 months later)

Not hooked up or set up correctly, usually in a purposefully deceptive manor.

I beg to differ: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&productId=8198552921665327724#specifications

(Unless you mean they aren't sold to consumers because they are too pricey at this point.)

No after the game the prices usually crash due to excess inventory.

As for the cables, yes you will need some good cables. But NOTE when in the store when you are watching one of those demonstration videos. That video is 1080P. It was recorded in 1080P and is being sent to the TV at 1080P.
When you get home and you hook it up and are watching the Spice Chanel don't be surprised if the quality is a little lower.
Odds are your cable company does not offer all it's Chanels in HD (1080P).

Also anti glare is a must and so is that auto contrast adjust thing. It really does help in a dynamic environment.

I dunno. I was desperate to post in that balloon boy thread he started, but it was already locked by the time I got there.

He definitely smelled of troll to me though. Maybe that's why he was so late with the balloon boy stuff. Been living in a cave.

On the subject of your new set, no matter which toy you buy you're gonna be scuppered because you still have to watch TV on it. And TV is rubbish. Although movies and Xbox can be fun.

First, no channels are in 1080p.
All the major networks are using either 1080i or 720p.

Second, slimy cable operators are compressing the hell out of channels that started out as HD:
