Those dudes were impressive!

Manthropology abounds with other examples:

* Roman legions completed more than one-and-a-half marathons a day carrying more than half their body weight in equipment.

* Athens employed 30,000 rowers who could all exceed the achievements of modern oarsmen.

* Australian aboriginals threw a hardwood spear 110 meters or more (the current world javelin record is 98.48).
Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay.

The only thing that falls from the sky is birdshit and fools!

Another painful fact that comes to mind is that our 'elite athletes' train full-time to become good at one skill exclusively, perhaps at the expense of many others - while for the people cited in the example any extrordinary feat they accomplish were all in a day's work...[:/]

That's exactly what I was thinking!

But isn't it amazing! This wasn't too long ago! And look how much we have changed?
Look it didn't take much for me to bust my tib fib and I thought I was in shape!
I can easily see the not to distant future people being physically too fragile to do what you guys do, not me yet because I'm not as cool as you guys....[:/]

That hasn't changed really. It is quite common in some select military units,I've done this on more than one occasion in my military career. There is actually a study out there that has compared the weights the average foot soldier has carried over the centuries and while we may have far better equipment today, the weight has remained very consistent incredibly.

What that article doesn't address is that humans have also become exponentially smarter than say the Neanderthals and early humans it references as being stronger than modern man. There is no question we have become a sedentary society in the USA and in the world compared to our planets forefathers but there are many more areas where we are better off.

No thanks. They probably didn't live much longer than 30-35 years. If I need to cmplete 1 & 1/2
marathons in a day I'll get in my truck, while carrying
10 times my body weight plus my gear.:D

We were larger, then got shorter in the 1400-1800 and then we got tall again correct?
Because I've been in some older homes and it's simply amazing how short people once were. Especially here in the North East.
But still, you have to admit it would be nice if schools included say 1 hour of physical activity per day?

It doesn't matter if this book is very poorly researched and documented. If you look at underlying story behind this, this could be true. Back then, they don't have the technology like we do today. They do everything by hand. In general sense, they are stronger than we do. We, today's world, are lazy as heck by using the technology to get us around: Elevator, Cars, Microwave, and so on......just like the Office Max's TV commerical (Easy Button). We press buttons and we are done. That's how lazy we are.[:/]

Between this thread and the one in SC... I was wondering

In a battle between a Klingon and a Vulcan, who would win?

Braun v. Brain

(I mean a TNG Klingon... don't ask why there's a difference, the do not discuss that with outsiders.... and a full Vulcan, not a "humanized" version like Spock, but we can NOT allow it to be during pon farr.)
