Nataly 38 #1 October 24, 2009 So I was talking to someone yesterday and they asked me when I was going to go back "home" (to Canada).. For me it was a bit of an odd question because I haven't lived there in 5 years, so I don't think of it as my home anymore.. I don't know at what point "going back" stopped seeming like the obvious thing I'd eventually do.. It got me thinking, though.. Is the UK really what I consider "home" now? I'm not so sure.. I fit in a lot better, but still often feel like an outsider.. Then again, the last time I visited Canada I felt *really* out of place and everyone kept telling me I sounded British!!! Ha ha ha!! So now I'm wondering about people who travel a lot. I don't mean just vacationing - I mean real globe-trotters.. Do they ever feel "settled"? Or do they always feel slightly out of place and hence get itchy feet? Anyone care to share their thoughts??"There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss
bigway 4 #2 October 24, 2009 I have not lived in New Zealand full time for 13 years. Last time i was back was 2005 for a few months, before that is was 2001 for a year. it will always be home though. Not because i just like the idea of it, but because it is what I feel. .Karnage Krew Gear Store .
DFWAJG 4 #3 October 24, 2009 I'm now living in my 6th state. I grew up in New Jersey and lived there a total of 23 years. I lived in Oregon for 3. California for 5 years then a few years later for 2. Connecticut for almost one now. Pennsylvania for college for 4. And New York for 2. New York is home. It's where I am the most comfortable. I loved the changing of the seasons, and the people. When I am there, I feel like I'm in my own skin. While it is the state I lived the least (almost), it's home to me. And when I talk about going home, I mean New York. KermieCorleone 0 #7 October 24, 2009 I can relate to the feeling. I dont consider myself a globe trotter (yet). I was born in India, raised in Kenya, moved to Canada and then moved to the US, ~5 years ago. The people I have grown up with, and known are now spread out even further than these 4 countries. Even though I still feel restless, wanting to see more and live in more different places, to me home is where ever my immediate family are (mom, pops, and sister) ...- Neil Never make assumptions! jimmytavino 16 #8 October 24, 2009 in my case,, never born and raised in New York State, Hudson Valley area not far from Conn.... Lots of family Still there..... But at age 18, went 350 miles northwest, to ANOTHER part of NY state...for college...a college which just so happened to have a "skydiving Club" so i joined in sept of my sophmore year, when i was 19... stayed in the rochester area after finishing college, cause i found a job, liked the local DZ's, had friends, and the cost of living was reasonable... Still i would drive the 700 mile round trip to see my Folks,,, Often.... ( they are in the very same home,, which my father built when he was 25 years old, and in which they raised 5 kids..) the house is in great shape, due to diligent upkeep and to the fact that he built it with a brick exterior...and one of my bros. and his family live next door, in a stucco house which was formerly my paternal Grandparents home. and the lot was big enough to allow dad to build a 3rd house,,, ( in his retirement) which is now the home of my dear sister.... I On the otherhand , have been one of the "out of town " siblings, living in the town where my wife Nancy grew Up.. so i have tons of family here,,,,( where we chose to make our home ) and tons of Family there.... I no longer think of my Home town as "home"... i've been livin' in this town for twice as many years now....as the time spent growing up. here is where our kids were born and raised, here is where my friends are, here is where i'm happy.... BUT i CAN return to the very home in which i was a 5, 6, 7 year old kid, , can eat in the same kitchen, walk in and out of the same back door,,, and litterally sleep in the same twin bed frame, from way back when... not bad... though sadly,, thanksgiving is usually spent here, rather than at M & D's table.. Oh well i still get to see 'em whenever we can visit... So NY is home,,, though i've split my time spent here,,,, between two distant parts of the state... jmy

Which is a little bit why I don't feel so happy here anymore. But hey - I'm fortunate enough to be getting my British passport in a couple of months.. So I'm sticking around until then and after that I think I will travel/work in another European country.. happythoughts 0 #21 October 24, 2009 It depends on what events define your life and where those events occur. It depends on how you live today, and where you want to live to do those things. example - going to a 10yr high school reunion. Some people have not changed. At 30 years old, you should be 30. kbordson 8 #22 October 24, 2009 My parents moved into their present house in Wisconsin just months before I was born... that was "home" for over 21 years (through college, it was my legal residence... but I often stayed at my boyfriends apartment) I was stationed out in South Dakota after I finished college. The first year that I was there... I was alone. "Home" was Wisconsin. Then Marty moved out... South Dakota became home. I wasn't always thinking about "what is he/are they doing." I was happy to be living where I stood. That made it home to me. Enjoying where I was and with whom ... being comfortable is being "home."
JENNR8R 0 #23 October 25, 2009 Jimmy... You are a vagabond compared to me. I've never lived outside of my county. I went to elementary, intermediate, high school, and college all on the same road. This is a very transient area. All of the friends and family that I grew up with moved away decades ago. They moved away from home!
