Canopy measurments....

Recommended Posts

I was checking out the dimensions for different canopies on PD's website (yep, bored), and I've noticed something weird.

When you multiply the Span and Max Chord on the Silhouette 230, you get 236 sqft (24.05 X 9.83), and with Min Chord 207 sqft, so I'll assume that the canopy is between 207 and 236 sqft depending on how tapered it is.

When you do the same for the Navigator 260 you get 227 sqft (21.74 x 10.45) and with Min Chord, 199 sqft , so I'll assume that the canopy is between 199 and 227 sqft. depending on how tapered it is.

Is the Navigator 260 actually smaller than the Silhouette 230 or are they just measured differently?

Spectre 230 - Span 22.20ft - Max Chord 10.57 - Min Chord 9.64.

Nav 260 - Span 21.74 - Max Chord - 10.45 - Min Chord 9.18.

Based on the info from the website, it would seem that the Spectre 230 is actually larger than the Navigator 260, and has a higher aspect ratio.

Are they measured differently or am I just losing my mind? :S:P

I’m no expert on the subject, but there are different methods to measure a canopy. I was told by Egon of RWS that PD uses a different method than the “standard PIA” method, and that PDs canopies would measure larger using the PIA method.

I think the PIA method is the actual square footage if the canopy were laid flat, and the way PD does it across the area after it’s inflated?
Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else.

I know that many companies measure differently, but this is on two PD canopies, which is why it doesn't really make sense to me.:S

PIA (Para-Flite and PISA) measures canopy chord in a straight line from the top leading edge straight to the tail. PIA Measures span across the top skin "X" number of inches back from the leading edge.
Performance Designs uses a more complex formula that roughly equals bottom skin area.
Icarus adopted PD's formula in 2001 and a few other manufacturers have followed.
As for the other hundred manufacturers ,,, your guess is as good as mine.
