d16842 0 #27 November 15, 2009 Quote Have you tried sharing drive C on the old PC? When viewing the old desktop, right click on C, go to properties - sharing. In frustration I did that on a work computer once and the network security people went nuts, describing all kinds of scenerios that could happen with people wandering our network.Tom B
madhatter 0 #28 November 15, 2009 On office networks, I concur. Just wanting to transfer files from an old pc to a new one on a home network - not much danger. Other option would be to buy an external casing, remove the harddrive and transfer the files that way, but it means unnecessary expenditure A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! Would you rethink that, given the significant number of people out there with completely open and unsecure wireless routers? I know... that is the first thing to fix. But as my freshman chemistry professor tried to explain, a little knowledge can be a very dangerous thing. Tom B
madhatter 0 #30 November 15, 2009 Yup, I guess I shouldn't be so lazy and type a bit more. Surely, once you've transferred the file - the only reason the drive is shared in the first place, the right thing would be to remove the sharing option. I run 3 computers on a reasonably secure home network, but I only share 1 folder on each of 2, the 3rd only sharing printers. Whenever Ineed to move someting from other folders, I either pass it through those shared folders OR unplug my external network cable before going through the whole sharing thing. Exactly the same when setting up new pc's at work - set up a pc to pc network witj no external access, transfer what I need & re-secure the network & sharing options before putting them back on the network. I wasn't advocating sharing the c-drive for eternity, but only for Billy to transfer his files so he wouldn't have to keep jumpoing to his old pc when looking for something. Guess I should have stated that from the beginning.A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! D.S #
theonlyski 8 #31 November 15, 2009 Quote I might as well ask my geek question in this thread. I have two computers now. A HP Pavilion on Windows 7 that I got earlier this summer, and a generic computer that I put together 5 years ago which is running Windows XP. There are files on the older computer that I sometimes need to access, but have to turn off the new computer since I have both computers plugged into one monitor, and I can only view one desktop at a time. If I can access the old computer's C drive from the new computer, that would be great. Both computers are hooked up to the router. What can I do? Forgive me if its already been posted, dont really feel like reading the whole thread. Easy solution, take hard drive out of old computer, install in new computer.
