skydiver30960 0 #1 November 19, 2009 My hard drive crashed. It had been about two months since my last iTunes backup (a couple dozen songs purchased in the interim, probably) when it happened. My wife has some of the songs on her iPod. The question is, is there any way to get the songs off the iPod? I figure that when I attach the iPod in question for the first time that it'll sync and wipe out all the songs on the iPod that I'm trying to save. What's the skinny? AggieDave 6 #2 November 19, 2009 There's software out there that will break your music free from your iPod. Here's a link to help: http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/copyoff/index.shtml As a side note, I quit buying music from iTunes and pretty much get everything from Amazon.com now. Great selection, easy to use, easy to purchase and download and it automatically loads the music into iTunes. DRM free and easily copied to your backup drive or media server in your house.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." skydiver604 0 #3 November 19, 2009 did you reboot the ipod, you can find instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320 "The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it." - Michelangelo
iluvtofly 0 #4 November 19, 2009 Connect your ipod, immediately stop the sync process. Go into My Computer and open your ipod that way. You should be able to access all of the music files that way. Then just copy them into a folder onto your computer. I did it once after my computer crashed a while back. Managed to save every song that was on my ipod. k-dubjumps 0 #5 November 19, 2009 I had the same thing happen and did what AggieDave suggested, but I don't remember which software I used (I can check when I get home from work). You will get a lot of options if you google it. It was fairly simple to do.Adrenaline is my crack DPH #3 D.S. #16 FAG #12 Muff Brother #4406

skydiver30960 0 #8 November 20, 2009 YOU GUYS ROCK! I tried iRip, but it choked and wouldn't recognize the iPod when it was plugged in. Hey, it's crap, but it's free. Then I did what was suggested here and in one of the websites you guys also posted, the copy and drag thing. In the end, we'll only have to repurchase seven songs. Schweet! Thanks again to all! DSE 5 #10 November 20, 2009 QuoteLosing a few songs on an iPod is not "important". Maybe not to someone who doesn't truly appreciate music it's not. But if they're songs that can't be readily replaced, or even if they are, they've been paid for, and worth what they cost. OP, I use a tool called "CopyTrans Suite." It'll break you free of iTunes for management, allow you to repair disks, manage libraries, create/edit/delete playlists, transfer songs, video, and photos. It's MUCH better than iTunes, and can sync with as many iPods as you'd like. You can even use it to copy directly from one iPod to another, unless it's DRM'd media, of course. I'm also with Dave, unless I HAVE to buy a piece of music from iTunes (due to exclusivity), I'll buy from Amazon or Walmart. Same price or cheaper, and nowhere near the hassle. AggieDave 6 #11 November 20, 2009 Quoteand can sync with as many iPods as you'd like That annoys the hell out of me! Its my music, its my iPods. Its all on my computers, but because I use different computers and iPods Apple throws a fit and would much rather me re-buy music.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." micduran 0 #12 November 20, 2009 Thanks! I will have to check that out. I manually manage my music on my iPod and never sync with iTunes. This sounds like it will make things a lot easier!Be patient with the faults of others; they have to be patient with yours.

I lost a whole bunch of music tapes in a car wreck once, which weren't readily replaceable, and for songs that I truly appreciated. Yet I was able to buy new ones. It was simply an inconvenience, and not "important". Surviving the car crash is what was important. You can't. Isn't it all about perception, John? What is important in one person's world isn't very important in someone else' and it's not for me nor you to judge what is or isn't, is it? I'm a fan of firearms, but I certainly don't want/need one with me at all times. Having music with me at all times is pretty damned important. To each his own. I'm just not that judgemental. freefal 0 #16 November 20, 2009 I did what "iluvtofly" suggested a while back when I got a new laptop. It worked fine, but now I can't see to sync correctly. I tried to reboot my iPod using that same apple link that was posted above, but it didn't seem to work. For some reason it connects, and then says everything is synced within just a few seconds. I've downloaded a new podcast that shows up on iTunes, but won't sync to my iPod and there is another podcast that I deleted, but it keeps showing up on iTunes but not my iPod. If anyone has had similar issues and found a solution, I'd love to hear it. "Ignorance is bliss" and "Patience is a virtue"... iluvtofly 0 #17 November 20, 2009 DO you have it set to just sync music maybe? It doesn't automatically sync everything. You may have to go in and select for it to sync your podcasts as well.

I live a very un-sheltered life and I would be really upset if I lost some of the songs in my MP3 collection. Some are 100% not replaceable. Some are from live recordings that weren't publicly released. Never mind that I would have to re-spend around $10,000 to replace the music collection I've built since the late 90s. John, next time I'm in Waller remind me to tell you about the time that someone stole my iPod out of my work car. I found and recovered the suspect in under an hour. Remember what I said my music collection is worth? Remember that theft in Texas is based on the value of the property?--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
