QuoteThat's good American auto design. And Chevy wonders why nobody wants their cars?
Well, in all fairness, the MTBF of the lightbulb and the entire rest of the vehicle is about the same. So really when the lightbulb goes out you might as well scrap the entire truck and buy a new one. This is perfectly consistent with all current American design. And even if it's not good for the environment, it is good for the economy. Not yours, but certainly the manufacturers.

Do you want me to go into my "oil change rant mode" concerning a certain Toyota Highlander hybrid? About how a huge piece of plastic has to be removed to get to the oil filter every 5000 miles, & how that giant piece of plastic is secured to the car with 10 fasteners of three different styles, two of which are quite similar & easily mixed up? Or about how frustrating it is to get oil back INTO the engine without spilling it everywhere or taking 5 minutes a quart to drain? Two pieces of plastic, worth maybe 3¢ each, could make this simple, repetitive, common, necessary job so very much easier...

No sir! ALL automakers have their "issues," not just the Americans.

Helluva a lot brighter, but fucking worthless.

You could get a psychiatrist to change it, But the light bulb would really have to want to change.
Sorry. I just couldn't resist.

Where are we going and why are we in this basket?
is needed (you can do it without the tool, but less fun).
On the battery side, it is a monster to get at.
Basically, it is an hour.
I have replaced the lights on both sides now.

QuoteThat's why I like my Passat, no tools required and it took about 2 minutes. Maybe 3 for the passenger side since it has one more piece of plastic covering in the way.
True for the headlights, but lots of things fail on the Passat that should never fail, and many are not so simple. When I can remember my VIN just from ordering parts, you know there are more things failing than should!

I felt that way on my new Escape when I got it and was ordering the aftermarket parts I wanted on it.

And tomorrow is a mystery

The bulbs do burn out a little more frequently due to being on whenever you are driving because of the DRL feature using the lowbeams. And yes, the Passat does have some issues, but at least they are easier to fix.
You know you want to spank it

Quoteand then you have to deal with the bulbs. I upgraded to the Sylvania 'blue-whatever' super fucking white/bright bulbs for $40 each, and they burned out within a few months.

Buy PIAA bulbs. Sleightly more expensive ($5 to be exact) but should last you at least two years. I use the PIAA Super Plasma GTX's.

Well, I've replaced a total of 2 headlight bulbs in 9 years (maybe the same one both times), and they are on anytime the car is moving, so two years doesn't sound so great to me...

69 & 70 Mach 1's with the 428...
I had a 1970...428 Cobra-Jet, wasn't advanced enough to consider the hole-cutting idea, I had a friend weld a couple custom made sparkplug sockets, to a couple pieces of bar-stock we bent into the appropriate shapes to clear the mounts...I'd get about 1/16th of a turn on the rears and have to move my little 'wrench' again.
At least I could go in from the top-side, my friend with the welder had a 69 Cougar with a 428...has to jack-stand it and do the same thing from underneath!

Well there is longevity and there is performance.

BTW in case some dont know..... Do not touch halogen bulbs with your bare skin. The oil from your your skin will burn it out early. Wear latex gloves while handling halogen bulbs.
You ignorant fool! Checks are for workers!
QuoteI have a 2001 Ford F-250 with 357,000 miles on it. Bought it new in 2001. Still has the original headlights.
But you bought a real truck

QuoteThere was a Mustang with a V-8, I forget what year, and to replace the 2 rear spark plugs on th left side you had to take the engine loose fron the motor mounts and jack it up several inches to get a socket on them.

In 1970, you could hear a Cobra-Jet "hiss" as it sucked air.
Now it's just a cute decal.

Yea, this has been going on for a lot longer than you may think!
Welcome to the wonderful world of vehicle maintainance!
BTW, plenty of different methods of aiming headlights with a Google search.
