kevinwhelan 0 #1 June 10, 2005 Hi sorry if this has been answered to death, but after an hour of searching I can only find advice to people about to buy a rig. I have a classic teardrop container in good condition, velcro riser covers are good. I ask my rigger to inspect them and replace anything that isn't perfect at every reserve repack. I have an exit weight of about 175 pounds and fall very slow flat about 110mph and most jumpers have a problem staying up with this. So I want to learn to sitfly. Is my rig too dangerous to learn on? When learning and presumably going unstable in a sit going to put extra strain on flaps etc? or is this rig OK for sit but not suitable for anything faster? Your opinions would help a lot "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? gus 1 #2 June 10, 2005 The Teardrop Classic is certainly not ideal for freefly. I've done several hundred jumps with my best mate where he's been jumping a Classic and nothing bad ever happened BUT his main flap was ALWAYS undone and to be honest it made me a little nervous. Like you, he was always very good about replacing the velcro and the riser covers never caused a problem. Rather strangely, he sold that rig (to someone at the same dz) and the new owner was told he wasn't allowed to freefly in it . If you keep the velcro in good condition, keep the closing loop tight and in good condition then it's probably ok for solos at least. Remember though, as soon as you start jumping with other people the chances of your pin getting knocked in freefall go up. IMHO you also have a responsibility to those you are jumping with. Do you really want a premature deployment just as your mate is coming in to dock on your shoulders? Keep it but aim to replace it sooner rather than later, that's what I'd do. kevinwhelan 0 #3 June 10, 2005 Quotehis main flap was ALWAYS undone Funny I didnt the main flap was a problem as this is not held by velcro but has a tuck tab and is quiet tight. Do you really want a premature deployment just as your mate is coming in to dock on your shoulders? This would be my big fear. I think I will try a few solo jumps with it and if that seems ok get someone to jump and observe me. If nothing looks too bad maybe I will jump solo and try to learn until I can get a more suitable rig. Thanks for the free advice..............it is free isn't it? "be honest with yourself. Maxx 1 #4 June 13, 2005 Hi, My second rig is a teardrop classic, which I used for my first freefly and headdown jumps.. Never had a problem with it, but i replaced my velcros every 70 jumps or so.. The main flap never opened and I always made sure that the pin was tight and in a good condition. But I saw other classics with open flaps all the time and even one where the risers came out in freefall I now have a teardrop sf which I really like..
