But from the practical standpoint, suppose someone gave you an upgrade gift to something you already had and made the old item obsolete? For example, suppose you got a new circular saw with wizbang features that busted out your old circular saw. What would you do with the old circular saw? Wouldn't it be cool to give that old circular saw to someone that needed it for a one time project - something like replacing a gate and then did not need it for anything else who could then re-gift it again? Had the electrician, Tom and his wife over for dinner a month or so after we moved in. As they are leaving for the night, we got on the talk of whiskey..... Tom says "Hey you guys go that Canadian Club Whiskey - that's some good stuff.." (People keep buying me Canadian Club, just because I am Canadian) and I reply "Do you like it, cause I have a cabinet full of it? I can't stand the stuff." And I go to the liquor cabinet and open it up, I have 5 bottles of CC and I take one out for Tom. Tom is pretty 'uncomfortable', "No, I can't take your whiskey", but I insist, "Tom, I hate this shit - everyone buys me Canadian Whiskey 'cause I am Canadian, and I fucking hate it, take the fucking whiskey- I will never drink it." So Tom and his wife take it, albeit a little weird-like, and leave. So my wife turns to me and says "So how do you think Tom felt about you giving him back the bottle of whiskey he gave you as a house-warming gift only a month ago?" no shit, that really happened, and it was me - all the way baby....... What would you do? I think it's one thing to say "hey I've got a circular saw if you need it" and gift it at that point (good for everyone - saves money, keeps things out of landfills, etc.). It's entirely another to give it as a substitute for a birthday or Christmas gift - that would very much depend on the recipient's mindset/values. I know some parents-to-be who would be thrilled by a shower gift of gently used baby clothes that the giver's own kid had outgrown; others would find anything but brand-new stuff "tacky." So you definitely have to know your audience. For me, if it's in good shape and you know that I can use it, awesome - you've given me a gift that is targeted and thoughtful and I always prefer that to another generic "I have to give you a gift" gift like candles or soap. (Not that I'm ungrateful for any gift, but the thoughtful ones are particularly special). Another option is to find a local NFP organization that could use it - a lot of time they post "wish lists" on their web sites and you might find an organization that's just been clamoring for what you have."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. You should just be honest about it and say - I've got "x" that someone gave me - do you want it? And wherever possible you should try and avoid giving it back to the person who gave it to you in the first place!!!
