TrophyHusband 0 #1 December 19, 2009 having come from idaho, my poor dog has never had to deal with fleas. we've even made frequent trips to washington without getting them. now the poor girl in miserable. i took her to the groomer and had her bathed and i got Advantage from the vet, but within 2 weeks she's covered in fleas again. is there something else that works better here? i can't stand to see her scratch and chew herself. iluvtofly 0 #2 December 19, 2009 Talk to your vet about Comfortis. It is a pill you give them once a month with their food. It kills flees on them for 30 days. All 5 Dr.'s at the animal hospital I work at love it and use it on their personal pets. Also ask if they have Capstar. It will kill every single flea on them for 24 hours. It's a great kick start to a monthly thing such as Comfortis or Advantage. I don't know about down in Florida but up here in Georgia it has been a particularly bad year for fleas because of all the rain. We've had at least 3 animals die because the fleas were so bad on them. So please people...if you see fleas on your pet please get them taken care of. There's probably even more on them than you can see. Edited to add: Have you treated your home for fleas? Such as a flea bomb that you can buy at Home Depot? You may not see them but if they're that bad on your dog they may be hanging out in your house under the couch or somewhere hence your dog getting them again so quickly. TrophyHusband 0 #3 December 19, 2009 thanks, i've written those down and i'll ask the vet about them. we haven't bombed the house, but the exterminator did recently come and spray inside and out. iluvtofly 0 #4 December 19, 2009 Exterminator good...bombing better. They like to hide under furniture and in the corners by the baseboards. If you do decide to bomb vacuum first. The vibrations from the vacuum will hatch all of the eggs around that way they are killed as well when you bomb. Also, make sure if your couch or any other furniture have little dust ruffles on them to pull those up so that the bomb gets under there as well. futuredivot 0 #5 December 19, 2009 Did you know all of this about fleas before you let RastaRican into your home? You are only as strong as the prey you devour
LisaH 0 #6 December 19, 2009 Go get some powdered Brewer's yeast. Put it in her food and you can sprinkle it on the carpet then vacuum. Kills the fleas and their eggs. Google it. It's natural, effective and safe. "Put a teaspoon (for bigger dogs, use about a tablespoon) of powdered Brewer's Yeast into their food a couple of times per week." Edited to add: When I had outside cats and a flea infestation, it worked great. Be yourself! MooOOooOoo
iluvtofly 0 #7 December 19, 2009 QuoteDid you know all of this about fleas before you let RastaRican into your home? Actually I learned all this right before he showed up. But it was all coincidence...I swear.
warpedskydiver 0 #8 December 19, 2009 Fleas can live for three years waiting for a meal, you need to think about that. Treating the yard is an ongoing cycle, in dry weather they get even worse. Bomb the house, treat the yard with Diazinon
tkhayes 348 #9 December 19, 2009 there are several flea/tick products - you just need to find the one that works for you. I had same experience, the ticks are ridiculous down here and fleas, once they get in your carpet at home, can take years to fully eradicate. At least with the comfortis/advantage/whatever products, the fleas might lay dormant in your house, but they do not cause your dogs any problems. jonstark 8 #11 December 19, 2009 Flea and tick shampoo for whenever you see fleas. Bomb the house whenever they get inside. Remember that tape worms are a real problem with fleas and don't try to use the pet shop remedy. All it is is a large capsule of volatile solvent like toluol which makes your poor pet miserable but doesn't work very well on the tape worms. The vet has a simple shot that works in minutes. Yuck!
