millertime24 8 #1 December 19, 2009 Can anyone tell me why my computer (actually my internet) thinks I'm in Germany? Every so often my yahoo mail will auto-translate to german, and even the ads you see on dz.com and google are all in german. I'm in Iraq so I could understand if things were in hodgie, but why german?Muff #5048

warpedskydiver 0 #3 December 19, 2009 Computers while deployed...sheesh When I was first in we cleaned weapons and watched the stars at nigh for entertainment. Mail was spotty. I was just remembering not bitching, sometimes I think it is better not to have internet, too much drama from home can be a real detriment to those deployed. I would not take it away from anyone, but having seen the effects of divorces or worse occur via emai makes me sick. It is plain old heartless. One guys wife left a video asking him to get killed. I guess six months separation was too much for her.

4000m 0 #7 December 19, 2009 You can hide/change the browser user agent (which tells a web server which browser you are using) via different plugins. For example for firefox via https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/59 However, this won't affect the sitation with the german IP address. The only option would be to go through a US/UK proxy or use a VPN connection to tunnel your traffic to the US. I don't know if this is technically possible in your case as I am sure the military does not allow encrypted connections through their networks, as it would prevent them from seing what you are doing.Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/4000meter Youtube Favorites: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjnVsp4Epra-PRDETgrF3M04B3X86X1eh
mnealtx 0 #8 December 19, 2009 The posters above are correct - you're getting your connection to the internet at large via Germany. You also DON'T want to try to proxy or bypass anything; dot-mil takes a pretty dim view of that.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. millertime24 8 #9 December 20, 2009 Actually our personal service is from a private company called Magic Island Technologies. This isn't a mil computer (its my laptop), but we do still fall under general order #1 (ie. no pr0n, gambling, or p2p downloading). I can pretty much do anything else though. So the question now is, is there a way to make it so the pc doesn't think I'm in Germany or am I just stuck with it for now?Muff #5048

Different providers have different gateways, I think on my first deployment we were shooting thru Russia, second was Australia, 3rd was Germany, 4th was somewhere else in Europe. Ill tell you what the 5th one is when I get there again"I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message
