military gear

Recommended Posts

I'm new to skydiving, and I'd like to get a rig that doesn't cost a fortune. what do ya'll think about the MC-4's and the MT-1XX's? You can get a pretty good deal on those, and I understand they can be outfitted with a cypress. they do have RSL, and the canopies are supposed to be really forgiving and easy to fly.

I jump an MT-1XX (almost identical to an MC-4) and have had no problems with it. Yes, it is big, heavy and semi-ugly but as a rule, the price is right. The rig is definitely over-engineered for the sport environment but was not designed for that. The canopies are large, docile, very forgiving and AAD compatible It is really strong and YOU will fail before it does. Have at it, my friend and don't worry about what people say about a rig they have never seen, let alone have any experience with. It is indeed a cheap entry into the sport. Eventually you will want to progress to a smaller sport rig but in the meantime the military gear will serve you well.

I'd strongly recommend that you put off buying a rig until after you are done with your student jumps. Talk to your instructors, local rigger(s) and gear dealers about your options; you can find good used sport equipment for semi-reasonable prices with some effort.

Sport gear instead of military gear makes more sense for a sport jumper for a variety of reasons. Replacement parts (handles, deployment bags, pilot chutes, etc) are more readily available, riggers are more likely to be familiar with it, and resale value will be much better when you're ready to buy your second rig.

The big military rigs are a good option for heavier jumpers (i.e. over about 250 pounds) though.

Hey Bob My name is Jerry AKA bigfall, I started jumping last year with some of my instructors equipment, because of my size he lined me up with a MC-4 rig and over the winter he did some work to it and added an cypress and last weekend I did my first clear and pull. Yes the rig is bulkie but I thinbk my rig is great because it is unique and no body at the drop zone has one so thereare alot of questions.
The canopys are very large and veru stable so yes they are very forgiving. In my opinion I would not trade it right now for anything,

P.M. me if you have any questions.

They love it, because they have not tried anything else

I think you are missing the point. That canopy is designed for one thing in particular and it does it pretty good all things considered. It's the same canopy I jump at work and when I have all that shit hanging off of me in the middle of the night, I still think it's a pretty good canopy. When I'm not working I jump my 100 sq ft canopy. Use the right tool for the job at hand and you'll walk away at the end of the day. For the big guys it's a great canopy.
