DavidB 0 #77 January 7, 2010 Heat wave in central NJ today! It was 39°F today! Since the wind wasn't howling I tried out my new "cap support" today: Pulled the cap off the back of the truck, ran to the store, loaded 2 new fence sections, ran home & fixed the fence that got blown down before X-mas (55 MPH winds for 20 minutes, also broke two power poles on my property & another down the road), & got the cap back on the truck. Supposed to start snowing tonite, again, but only 1"-3" expected. Oh, & we'll be back in the deep freeze soon enough, along with most of the country. http://www.weather.com/weather/local/08533 Global warming? Must be in Copenhagen. masterrig 1 #79 January 8, 2010 That's a fairly big chore. Have you ever noticed... you seem to work faster in colder weather? We get-up to 90-mph winds at times... especially in the Spring-time. More often, winds get-up to around 70-mph. Fortunately, we haven't had any serious damage. Two power poles blown down is definately, not a good thing. AggieDave 6 #80 January 8, 2010 Windchill was in the low 20s(F) today where I am. I ride a motorcycle all day at work. It was cold. That and I HATE full face helmets, hate them. So I have an open face helmet, fleece ninja mask, a fleece face mask, a fleece neck warmer, a very thick/heavy lined leather jacket, thermals on, two layers of gloves, knee high boots and my Oakley sunglasses. There was a small part of my brow line that wasn't covered. That exposure to the wind and cold gave me a headache. I still wouldn't trade this job for a world. I get to ride a very nice BMW motorcycle all day and get paid to do it. That's pretty neat.(That and it still beats the 110F weather this summer)! --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." It's so cold that the thought of a "Cold Beer" ain't interesting!! Guess I'll have to break out my Espresso machine and start making "Crater Bait Cocktails!" aka "Double Malfunctions!! Ya' start yer Espresso brewing then get a 12 oz beer mug and put in a jigger of Coffee liquor, Irish Cream, Dark Rum and a smidge of Amaretto, Frangellico or the like and when the steam comes up, froth all that in the mug and pour the whole caraffe of espresso over it. FlyingJ 0 #86 January 8, 2010 This time last year I was sleeping in my tent in 14 degree lows out in the Davis Mountains while on a prescribed fire detail. Was supposed to be back out there for another couple weeks starting next week but a nasty bout of bronchitis is going to keep me home in "warm" south Texas. I LOVE the Davis Mountains in the winter. So crisp and clean, and with the right sleeping bag one of my favorite places to camp in the winter. Last night at 3:30am it was 61 degrees when I got back to the station from a call. Went out again at 5:45 and it was 50 degrees, got off shift at 10am it was 40 and by noon it was 31. It's just not right, not in South Texas!!!Killing threads since 2004. Usually, it's some idiot who throws a cigarette out the car window or someone using a cutting torch or welding. I guess, they figure the 'burn ban' is off it's o.k. I moved on to EMS full time as fire was taking a pretty big toll on my broke ass body, so getting on some fires is just a side job once in a while now. Winter time out there is fire SETTING time. Last winter we burned upwards of 18,000 acres in two weeks. It's amazing what you can do with planning and the right personnel/equipment. Wish I didn't have to miss it this year! More prescribed fire means less wildfire = a good thing. It's tough to think that way though when wildfire = overtime!Killing threads since 2004. The most humorous stories are the people who take them into their homes to "revive them". They do revive. Then, you have a 3-4 ft reptile going through an anxiety attack in your kitchen. They knock over stuff. Rattlers will get fairly motionless around 30 degrees too. masterrig 1 #100 January 8, 2010 I saw a story on the news yesterday about Iguanas in Florida. They showed Iguanas in the cold weather there and the reptiles fall-out of the trees.
