Cat question

Recommended Posts

I have a cat that stays out in the barn, and has started shitting all over the floor and not in her litter box like she used to.
A guy at work said that if you dont empty it every day, they will do that.
True?

For the record, I've been emptying it every other day.

Now, when should you change the litter? If it's getting to be noithing but clumps?

Not true. Mine gets emptied every other day (roughly) and my cat has no issue with it; some cats might be more picky, but generally when a cat has been behaving one way (e.g., using the litter box just fine) and starts behaving differently, it might indicate a problem.

My cat who passed away this summer from kidney disease (among other things) gave me her first signal that something was wrong by using the dining room carpet instead of the litter box to do her business. I imagine it had a lot to do with the fact that urinating was painful/uncomfortable and she developed a negative association with the box.

As for how often to change it, depends on how big it is and how many cats use it. I have one cat now and a massive box, so there's plenty of room for clean litter and clumps so I don't have to empty every single day. If I had more cats/less room, I'd have to empty more frequently.

I noticed that some cats are picky in that you have to scoop the box often or they will not use it. I worked at a vet clinic where they had an in-house cat that would pee all over the place and was on medication for it.

I only add litter to the box when it starts getting low (usually after 4 scoopings).

Maybe put out a couple of litter boxes?

in my experience any change in cat behavior is usually an indicator of the cat being unhappy with something, or being unhealty.

did you change her diet ?
did you change her litter type ?
did you start on something outside or inside the barn that can be bothering her ?
do you have Scottish or Irish ancestry ?

all those things may have an effect. Or she can just be a bitchy cat :)

I know that one of my cats jumped inside the laundry basket and peed - all while looking right at my wife. We took her (the cat) to the vet, and apparently she had a urinary tract infection. A course of antibiotics over a week, and she never peed outside the litterbox since.
