And that's a bonus. I'm just trying to explain why she may not have thought it was funny. Something I read at least 20 years ago said something to the effect of; "the lack of a shared, common experience is the biggest obstacle to communication." A lot of times if somebody doesn't "get" something, it's because they don't have anything appropriate to relate to it.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

I'm not saying that numbers are the be all and end all, but . . . if THAT many people like it and somebody else doesn't, isn't it possible that it's that person's aesthetic that is outside the bell curve and not the product?quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Shotgun 1 #32 February 1, 2010 QuoteA lot of times if somebody doesn't "get" something, it's because they don't have anything appropriate to relate to it. I was thinking that this might be the case, rather than gender. I think that I related to the movie a little bit more than I would like to admit. But then my 17-year-old nephew thought it was hilarious too, and I don't think that he has much in the way of experiences to relate it to; he probably just liked the goofiness of it. Though, I have never had any complaints about my aesthetic. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

quade 4 #35 February 1, 2010 I once knew a woman, in the entertainment industry no less, that was both completely insane and in denial over the idea that there even were such things as "chick flicks" and "guy flicks". She couldn't understand why some films would appeal more to one sex than another. She didn't understand why some humor appealed more to one sex than another. For me, here's the general rule; the closer the thing is to The Three Stooges, the fewer women will like it. That's not to say all women won't like it, but broad, physical humor usually isn't what does it for them. Generally speaking women wouldn't find whacking a baby's head into a car door funny, but I bet just about every guy in the audience laughed. Guys are also going to find road trip pictures with strippers involved more funny than women will . . . I'm just sayin'.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

FlyingJ 0 #37 February 1, 2010 I saw it after my brother was raving about the movie all day. I laughed plenty, but I wouldn't say it lived up to the hype. I also don't think I would have laughed quite as much as I did had I not been watching it with a group. That said, I also think Family Guy (which seems to be almost universally loved) is one of the most stupid shows on TV. I'll laugh my ass off now and then watching it with other people at the station, but you wouldn't ever catch me watching it on my own.Killing threads since 2004. I spent 12 years, from age 14 to 26 in Utah. A lot of Napoleon Dynamite rang true if you spent that much time behind "The Zion Curtain."Yeah, I laughed my a$$ off in parts of that movie. The Hangover? It was funny, but a little less creative, a little more scatalogical.
