xbox 360 help

Recommended Posts

First, I'm not a gamer my son is.

Ok my son has a xbox 360 and some of his games that used to work now don't,
The video intro plays then when it goes to load the game the screen comes up with " can't read clean disk "
the disks are clean with no scratches, I passed one disk through a disk cleaner that renews the surface of the disk
but it still won't play, I wonderd if it had had a knock and the laser was a little out of alignment but it plays DVD movies
perfectly. All his games that are CD's have no problems.

I'm thinking that the laser might be just a tad out of alignment or the pot needs adjusting,
The DVD drive is a BENQ VAD6038 and here in Spain they are like gold dust and are not swapable for
Haitachi or Samsung. I really do not want to send it off to MS untill I have exausted all possibilities
of fixing it myself.

Anyone have any ideas or had the same problem.

A couple of quick thoughts:

1) is this with all games or only 1 or 2?

2) do you have the xbox sitting vertically or horizontally? Try switching the position

3) is it in an enclosed space? Those things are notorious for overheating and while overheating shouldn't cause the problem you describe, who knows..

No it dosen't do it with all games, the two games that won't play are Assasins creed and Halo.
The games that do play I'm pretty shure they are CD's not DVD's

The box is horizontal and well ventilated.

Tony, Hi I've cleaned the lens with a DVD cleaner, but it made no difference.

My unit gives the same error occasionally, not as bad as yours does. For me it was crashing about once an hour or so, and just like with your situation the disc was fine.

The solution for me was to load the games to the hard drive rather than always run them off the disc. I didn't see any real increase in the game speed or load times but the games now run virtually crash-free.

I asked because I had the same problem with GTA IV (until the unit just gave me RRoD and I just got a new one).

The idea to load the games into the hard drive is a good one.

I third that. Just so you know, you'll still need to insert the disk when you want to play the game, but the console only has to read enough of it to verify that it's a genuine copy. After that it will just use the hard drive, which has the advantage that it's faster AND it reduces the wear on your DVD drive - so you're less likely to have the same problem recur.

All fixed now, and my son's happy again.

Turns out that the DVD was in fact a "Lite-on" and not a Benq.
Armed with a ton of information from various scorces on the net
I managed to determin that it was the laser dying, after adjusting the pot
it still wouldn't read games on dvd's, it would read games on cd's it would read
movies on dvd's and music,

Basically a dvd game spins much faster than a normal dvd so the intensity and focus
of the laser has to be perfect.

After reading loads about the gamebox dvd I learned that you can't just buy a new dvd and install it.
It has to be flashed with the original firmeware. It turns out that the Lite-on dvd can't just be connected to the pc and
flashed you need to buy additional hard ware, so I opted to buy just the laser replacement, duly fitted and now it works a treat.

Next project, Find an old dvd and flash it with a new firmeware, MS kiss my ass
