masterrig 1 #27 February 12, 2010 Quote My great Grandmother was born in the 1890's (we think, may be earlier), came over from the old world (Italy) around the turn of the century, died in 1965. If anyone knows about recipes using tomatoes, she did. I do remember occasionally straining tomatoes to remove the seeds & skins, but this was pretty rare & of course depended on the recipe. Today we don't make anything that requires seed removal, so the tool is buried (yes, there is a strainer/pan with a rotating flat that presses whatever to the strainer that is the bottom of the pan). Besides tomato seeds are good roughage, & one can never get enough! ...and they won't sprout in your stomach! My grandmother had one of those gizmos. When I was a kid, she showed me how to operate it. She only used it when making tomatoe sauce and didn't want seeds in it. Chuck
