50 beautiful virgins, and a life time of free beer for all

Recommended Posts

Ok, so that was a complete lie, but it got your attention. ;)

I would really appreciate it if you could do a VERY QUICK questionnaire on drink driving for a peice of coursework I'm doing. It'll take you a couple of minutes and you'd be doing me a huge favour!

Cheers :)

Done. But number 2 needs some clarification where it asks if I have ever driven while over the legal limit. If I have 3 beers am I over the limit? I don't know, almost certainly not, especially if I just ate, but I don't really know because I don't carry one of those pocket breathalyzer things. You might want to add "not sure" as a choice.

Thanks for doing the survey. :)
I agree, but by the time I realised, it would only allow me to make changes if I deleted all responces :(

It's not too much of an issue, as I wanted to know if people had consciously decided to drive, knowing that they were probably over the limit.

Just our of interest, what is the legal limit in the USA? It's 80mg of alcohol p/100ml of blood in the UK, considerably higher than most of Europe. I think this sends confusing messages as previous campaigns have encouraged people not to drink at all if driving, yet the legal limit probably allows most people to have a pint or two.

My personal opinion is that it should be high enough to allow for traces from non-alcoholic drinks (mouthwash etc), but low enough to be able to say that drinking just one pint/bottle could put you over the limit, it may reduce drink related accidents. Sure people would do it anyway, but a lot of people think they're legal after two or three beers, when they may well not be. Anyway, I digress.

Legal limit in most of the US is 0.08% Blood alcohol content. That compares with the 80/100 you quoted (I looked around and mg/ml seems to be the same as 1/100% BAC)

Some places are still 0.1%, but there is a big push to get it lowered.

FWIW, the limit for commercial vehicles (semi trucks) is .04, with an 8 hour "bottle to throttle" rule.

If a person consumes X amount of alcohol within a certain amount time, he'll reach the same ultimate level of intoxication regardless of how much food is or is not in his stomach. More food will simply slightly slow down the post-consumption speed at which his blood alcohol level reaches that ultimate level.

In most US states, drunk-driving laws have been amended in recent years to disallow the defense that at the moment the person was arrested, his blood alcohol level was still "on the rise" and had not yet exceeded the legal limit, even if his post-arrest BAC level is over the limit. In other words, in most states, if you drink enough to ultimately exceed the legal limit, you're deemed to have been legally intoxicated as of the moment you consumed the intoxicating drink.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. And of course it depends on what alcohol percentage the beers had, and over what time frame you drank them in.

Thanks everyone for helping out. I've had 60 repsonses, which is great as it was a quick bit of informal research. I was told to aim for 25, so this is awesome.

I wonder if the fact the the majority of people who completed it were skydivers (posted it on ukskydiver.co.uk too) made much difference?

It's closed now so I can stay up half the night and try and write a proposal for a social marketing campiagn. :)

Except Louisiana where it is 8" bottle to throttle. You don't want to try to grasp your drink and the steering wheel at the same time, you might drop your drink.

On the survey the "Have you EVER" opens a big door for someone my age. There's lots of shit that I've done that I don't agree with now.

an interesting follow up would be a survey of people who have had a dui in the past and their behavior before compared to after the dui. i had a dui 10 years ago and it stopped me from drinking and driving. before then, i did it regularly. as much as a dui sucks, now i can say that it was a good thing for me to get. many people don't learn their lesson though.

Colorado also has a lesser offense of Driving While Ability Impaired with a .05 BAC limit.

So does Wisconsin. That one is usually applied when something else happens (like an accident), it usually needs other evidence of impairment.

For "standard" DUI (above 0.08) the BAC is usually enough to get a conviction (if you are pulled over at a checkpoint for example).
