masterrig 1 #2 May 23, 2005 Try: 'Silver Parachute'. Allen Silver, who owns the company is there in the Bay area. You can find him on the net at his business name. Hope, this helps. Chuck

Treejumps 0 #5 May 24, 2005 If you can't stick your head through the hole its good to go for the weekend. Seriously, if it is small (under an inch or two) and not on a load bearing seam or point, it will be ok for a weekend. It will be right at home with the new little holes all those pricker bushes at Perrine will put in your canopy. Cya

riggerrob 643 #7 May 24, 2005 QuoteLMAO! I thought, we were done with that 'acid mesh' thing!? That was 20-yrs. ago. Chuck >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Unfortunately we are still not finished with acid mesh - it is still part of the CSPA rigger A course syllabus. I wish all that old junk would quietly rot away in someone else's closet. My boss banned round reserves from Pitt Meadows a couple of years ago. Now the only rounds that I repack are in pilot rigs. NickDG 23 #11 May 24, 2005 Allen is an excellent rigger, it was just the endless PIA seminars on the subject, LOL, but he was correct to do so. On a serious note, you can still see pilot rigs that pop up from time to time that fail the PH test . . . However, it came up again when BASE manufacturers are tinkering with using mesh covered vents . . . and I have a 1980s 48-inch BASE PC that's mesh fails the PH test. Also, from time to time, BASE jumpers still use older rounds of this period for water jumps. For anyone not hip to acid mesh it was a fire retardant added to the mesh during the manufacturing process that caused the problem. When left packed for a period of time, like a round in a reserve container, the mesh could degrade the F-111 it came in contact with. I think it was first noticed when camping tents using mesh covered openings started falling apart after one season. The parachute manufacturers where purchasing mesh from the same place as the tent manufacturers . . . NickD BASE
masterrig 1 #12 May 24, 2005 You're right. I've had the pleasure of knowing Allen for several years. (I hope, he doesn't read what you said about him. His head will only get bigger.) He was a rigger for the old G.Q. Security Co. The same company who brought the world's attention to 'acid mesh'. I have had two or three fail the testing process. It just got to be a pain in the ass... still is. I hadn't heard the 'tent' story. Interesting to know. Chuck Chuck
