murrays 0 #151 February 27, 2010 I yelled "Tie Game" when I saw the puck come out with Luongo down and couldn't believe Slovakia didn't score. Canada sat back and started watching the game and the Slovaks nearly made them pay. Don't worry Billy, USA's gonna need every bit of their A game to win Gold...as will Canada. CanuckInUSA 0 #152 February 27, 2010 QuoteIt was a Canadian who fell, a Canadian judge and it's on Canadian soil. Coincidence? I think not! I just watched the replay on the internet. What I saw was the 3rd place Canadian losing his edge and then the Korea also losing his edge split second afterward. Disqualifying Apollo Ohno was bullshit. Gold: Charles Hamelin, Canada Silver: Apollo Ohno, USA Bronze: Sung Si-Bak, Korea IMHO ... you have a valid beef. BTW: Ohno's hand is on the Canadian's hip at the start of the last corner, but he does not give enough of a push to warrant a disqualification (from what I can see) and the Korea fell on his own accord. CanuckInUSA 0 #154 February 27, 2010 QuoteI gotta ask...is the USA team that good... or is the Finland team that bad? I just watched the replay of the 1st period. The answer is both. The USA played really well and Finland? Well Kiprusoff made a bone-head play on the 1st goal (if you are 40 feet out of your own net, you don't try and finesse the puck to your teammate), 2 powerplay goals by the USA, poor defense on the 4th goal, poor defense plus a cold goalie on the 5th and 6th goals and lights out. In all this onslaught by the USA, Finland could barely even muster up a shot on net before the USA was up 6-0. Summary: the USA is for real but Finland is better than this, they failed to show up. murrays 0 #159 February 28, 2010 QuoteAnd suddenly Canada starts winning some gold medals. Man they have been coming in bunches the last few days! From Zero Gold in Montreal and Calgary to leading the Olympics with 13 (with one more to come I hope) this year, we have had a terrific Olympics. I wasn't too excited about the Games before they started but I have really enjoyed them this year. Many, many terrific performances by athletes from all countries, it's been great. I'm going to miss checking out the action after tomorrow. I don't know how many of you watched the Bronze medal game tonight. It was a great battle between the Finns and the Slovaks. I've always liked the Finns but it would have been great for Slovakia to win their first hockey medal and they came very close. Despite some furious action at the end of the third as the Slovaks tried to tie it up the Finns prevailed. The Finns had to come back from two goals down after being embarrassed yesterday so it showed their grit and character. They stayed out on the ice for the longest time saluting the crowd, throwing their bouquets to people in the stands and enjoying the moment. Hats off to Slovakia for a great performance. Cheers, Murray
mdrejhon 8 #160 February 28, 2010 We may not own the podium, but it seems we own the gold! From zero gold medals in 1976, and zero gold medals in 1988, to being the gold leader in 2010... Wow. Just hope Vancouver doesn't get saddled with the Montreal Owe-lympics debt, they only finished paying the 1976 debt in year 2006. I don't think it's in the same "league" though for Vancouver, thankfully.

Wow. Yep, we are tied for the most gold at a winter Olympics ever. What we lacked was the depth of talent that larger countries showed. Congratulations to the US, they smoked the competition in total medals this year,... ...but we got the most gold. Did we mention that? Quote Just hope Vancouver doesn't get saddled with the Montreal Owe-lympics debt, they only finished paying the 1976 debt in year 2006. I don't think it's in the same "league" though for Vancouver, thankfully. The games will certainly lose money. The construction was done during the boom that drove construction materials and (especially) labour rates through the roof, followed by the bust that left some tickets unsold. The weather produced extra costs, particularly on Cypress Mountain, site of the freestyle and snowboard events. They shipped in a lot of snow. They also lost a lot of spectator sales as they had to close some viewing areas as the snow they were built upon melted. The third big factor was the unprecedented $900B security bill; outrageous but what are you going to do. On the other hand the blow from the recession was softened considerably due to the preparations. Call it stimulus. BTW we got the most gold.
CanuckInUSA 0 #162 February 28, 2010 Quote The games will certainly lose money. That they will. But we should not compare these games with the 1976 Montreal Olympics (not saying you are). The Montreal Olympics were ripe with corruption. When VANOC was bidding for these games, nobody anticipated the recession. Quote $900B security bill Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Not counting the domestic anarchists, so far (knock on wood) the security team has done it's job. Oh and even with the anarchists, the security team handled them very well. Quote BTW we got the most gold Woot Woot ... Not that it solves all the countries problems, but I am feeling good. Even if Canada was shut out of my favorite individual events, Alpine Skiing. murrays 0 #163 February 28, 2010 We will win 26 medals total and either 13 or 14 Gold. 26 is 2 more than our previous best at Turin. The Gold medal total will nearly double or double the 7 Gold won at Turin. Very successful Olympics for Canada. The Games may have lost money but will the overall economic benefit for BC be positive overall? Hotels, restaurants, bars all must have been doing booming business. And I think there will be long-term benefits from bringing the world's attention to Vancouver/Whistler and increasing tourism. mdrejhon 8 #165 February 28, 2010 They'll somehow figure out how to sugarcoat the numbers. Harder to do in the Internet age than 1976 or 1988, but... security bill -- it was just a routine miltary/police exercise infrastructure bill -- it was just recession stimulus sea to sky bill -- its just regularly scheduled freeway upgrade athletes village -- it's just real estate construction athletes training -- we just want to be better for Sochi 2014 concerts -- we were gonna have them anyway yada, yada... BTW... Security was "only" $0.9B, but still outrageous. We could've built two stadiums or wired the entire city with gigabit fiber, with that!

skydiver30960 0 #167 February 28, 2010 I can understand how a Canadian hockey fan could be a little irate by that previous period. But as a fan of hockey in general, HOLY CRAP what a great game so far! And for the most part, Luongo has been AWESOME! He's been making saves standing on his head! skydiver30960 0 #168 February 28, 2010 Great ending to an (overall) great Olympics! edit to add more: what a great shot by Crosby. It was a low percentage, bad angle shot, but he put it on the net and good things happened. This is a perfect example for all learning hockey players (including us out of shape middle aged beer-leaguers): you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. CanuckInUSA 0 #169 February 28, 2010 You don't understand, defensemen DO NOT go chasing the puck and leave opposing players behind all alone in front of the net to pounce on a free puck.
