Jet Packs (An Update) . . .

Recommended Posts

I, and probably many others my age, became fascinated by Jet Pack type personnel flight since reading Dick Tracy comics as kids. Then I actually saw one as a young boy at the New York World's Fair in 1964. I didn't think much about jet packs again until 2002 when an Elsinore skydiving friend of mine made headlines, not for flying a jet pack, but for kidnapping the inventor of one. If you're an Elsinore old timer you'll remember Chris Wentzel. If not just pretend that tomorrow you awoke to the news that Skymama stuck up a Brink's Armored truck! That how stunning the news was to me. I knew Chris all through the late 70s and 80s as a great jumper, camera guy, and Hollywood stuntman. He was also funny as hell often having us laughing our butts off on the DZ. I still can't believe he got involved in this.

Of course there's another skydiving connection to jet packs as Troy Widgery, a former Perris jumper, and owner of "GO FAST" is building jet packs too.

Anyway check out this fellow in Mexico and how he's advancing jet pack technology. If you think not a lot technology comes out of Mexico this fellow will change your mind. He's very impressive:

Here's an early Bell Labs model Jet Pack, like the one I saw at the '64 World's Fair, flying at Disneyland in 1966:

Here's Chris Wentzel's story: He received seven years in prison while his partner in the crime was sentenced to life. Chris should be getting out about now. I hope he still has his sense of humor!

The rival - a fellow stuntman-cum-inventor - is a police suspect in the bludgeoning murder of another man, who was involved in complex business deals over the same cursed jetpack.

For some reason I can't read the first part right "stuntman-CUM-inventor"??:D

That's quite a tale. Seriously nasty behaviour all round.

My only disappointment in the story was that Barker didn't use the obvious device to escape his kidnappers. :)
