Neptune for Night Jumps

Recommended Posts

Did night jumps saturday night. It was the first night jumps that I have done since I bought my Neptune. It worked great. Myself and another jumper were paranoid wondering if it was really going to light up. It has a battery saving mode and doesn't illuminate until you leave the plane. Very easy to see.

How do ya like it Johnny?

I scared myself the first time I used my neptune for a night jump. It was a 2 way. I didn't reread the night mode section of the manual before the jump since I was pretty sure I just had to enable the back light and it would turn on in freefall. We got out, planning to do some 360s and redock between them. Well after exiting I noticed my altimeter was dark. Crap. Shoulda read the manual. I tried to signal to the other guy that I was looking at his altimeter, but he turned and did a 360. I figured there was no harm in doing one myself... by the time we redocked, my neptune was lit up. Whew. Worked perfectly, staying lit till I touched down.

I scared myself jumping like that too. Did not realize how old the battery was. Before exit I hit the light and it light up. Jumped out and in free fall the thing DIED! I hit the button again and it turned back on. I never stopped to think that the battery was not showing low during the day, and that the light kicking on would draw enough battery to kill it. From then on I replaced it every 4 months.

Heh, same deal. Was doing a night HAHO and the thing died at 5k. I think they recently updated the battery monitor in the software though.
