skyrider 0 #52 March 2, 2010 Being a marine, (I'm not) is something you either get, Or will never understand, I think this thread proved that point! I always said, IF I had joined, it would have been Marines, Why go, if your not going to go with the best!

Sit out in the Tonkin Gulf and have a bunch of Marines watch over my ass. That's where I was gonna go. Alas, to my great good fortune my draft number was not called in the lottery and I went on to other, more self-directed, pursuits. Whew!
BillyVance 35 #54 March 2, 2010 I am just going to put this out, regardless of anybody's opinion but when you have the world's greatest fighting force, the U.S. Marine Corps, you do NOT want a weak link in that force. They are usually the ones that go in a conflict first, kick ass first and then leave the rest for the Army to mop up. Marine boot camp is there to weed out all the weak links, and make those who are left as tough as they can be. Is that about right Nick? Is that about right Nick?Yes, becoming physically tough certianly helps in boot camp, but it's growing mentally tough that gets you through. I knew more than a few small in stature Marines who were total ass kickers. And it's that mental toughness that stays with you forever. Even after you get old and grow man boobs, LOL . . . NickD I agree on the mental aspect. Forgot to mention it then. One of my brother's school friends went into the Marines. Capt. James "Trey" Wilbourn III was one of the first fatalities of the first Gulf War. I used to see him come visit the house and spend time with my brother when they were in high school. Seemed like an outstanding person. Looking back, I wasn't surprised, he loved the Corps. http://www.flyauburn.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=42:accomplishments&catid=1:latest&Itemid=49 You guys have my respect."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
stitch 0 #58 March 2, 2010 Not to hurt your feelings Nick, bur your recollection of basic training doesn't sound much different than infrantry OSUT in the early 80's. Except they didn't recycle as much. If you didn't cut it they sent you back to mama. Fro what I've seen it was back prior to the sixties when the real abuses occurred. I f that's what you want to call it. If you screwed back in those days the DI would just punch the shit out of you till you got it right. I spent most of my childhood wishing my old man had never served in the Marine Corps. Because whatever they did to him on Parris Island was apparently ingrained and he carried it with him his entire life. When we were growing up, my brother and myself learned to stay a respectable distance away from him. Because if we screwed up it was five across the eyes without warning. And then of course the obligatry "That's how they did in the Corp's" comment."No cookies for you"- GFD "I don't think I like the sound of that" ~ MB65 Don't be a "Racer Hater"
fasted3 0 #59 March 3, 2010 I got drafted and went in the army in 1970. My memories of basic are not that good. On the day that I got out, I threw my stuff in a dumpster, and never looked back. F.T.A.But what do I know?
