NickDG 23 #1 March 8, 2010 Okay, I totally have it handicapped . . . Avatar will get skunked! (Didn't see it.) But Marlon Brando or Lawrence Olivia didn't need clay make up to act. Jeff Bridges will win "Best Actor" and not because of his current movie (didn't see it) but for "The Big Lebowski" from 1998. But it will actually be a posthumous award he'll share with his dad, Lloyd Bridges. To newbs it won't be for his dad's, "I picked a bad week to stop sniffing glue," in the movie "Airplane" but for "Sea Hunt!" Other than that newcomer Gabourey Sidibe is going to clean up for "Precious." This includes everyone from studio execs to grips on the set to popcorn sellers in the theaters. Second, I'm rooting for innovation and a way to get people back in theaters. Third, I'm rooting for that which most closely matches my own aesthetic sense of what makes a good story. As an objective standard, I've been studying and really believe in the theories of Blake Snyder and his Save the Cat! series of books. I know it's fashionable for some folks to hate James Cameron and dismiss Avatar as being derivative, but when I look at the films and think to myself what defined the year in terms of getting people excited about seeing movies, Avatar just flat out wins without question. At least in my mind. Oh, and I guess the box office too. I think it's a coin toss as to what film will actually win Best Picture or Best Director, but when I look at what was actually done and what was the biggest risk and accomplishment, I have to go with Avatar and Cameron. But that's just my opinion of who I think should win based off of what I think Hollywood should be rewarding. So, what do I think is actually going to win? One night at work we were called to the house of a male with shortness of breath in Hollywood. We found a guy who was wasting away and probably weighed 70 pounds. On a table, not far from his bed, were seven Oscars statues. I had to look at them twice as I wasn't sure they were real. But they were. I can't say who he was (Hipaa Laws) but he died anyway. . .
