PD-113R into a Mirage/TSO issues?

Recommended Posts

The Vector was TSO'ed under TSO C-23b in the STANDARD category, the "highest" category available. As far as I know, no PD reserves were TSO'ed in "B". The Vector Tandem 360 Reserve was TSO'ed in "B", but Relative Workshop holds the TSO. Some PD reserves are TSO'ed in "C", but some of the reserves mentioned above were TSO'ed in "D", a category not mentioned by the AC. Once again, AC 105-2C is advice, NOT law.

No problem,
I just thought I would let you know because he is busier than a three legged cat trying to bury a turd on a frozen pond (thanks JT for that one). Anyway, it is mostly technical interpretation junk but he has gotten some answers for you already and I think you'll be happy with the answers but he'll have to explain all the details.

It's been a few months with nothing new. Any word?

Derek,
Just a note for you. Jeff the maker of the Mirage is working on your request for info. But there is one thing about Jeff, he is EXTREMELY thorough. He definately isn't blowing you off but he has been working with the FAA to give you a completely researched and proper answer on this situation. He's busy as hell around here and basically runs the show so give him some time but he is working on it for you and will give you more details on the subject then you thought existed.

Been a while without any answers.

I think you are misunderstanding the issue. If the harness is rated to 3,000 pounds and a reserve produces more force than that, then the 2 are not compatible.

Funny!
When I train new riggers, I spout CSPA dogma which says that when you mix and match components with different TSO ratings (i.e different weights and airspeed limitations) the entire assembly reverts to the weight and speed limitations of the weakest component.
You can still legally jump the rig as long as you do not exceed the weight and airspeed limitations on the lightest and slowest component.

You are missing the point. It isn't that the Reserve or the harness is rated to less weight. It is that the reserve produces more load force during opening than the harness is certified to.

How much weight under a PD-113R would produce a maximum peak force of 3,000 or less pounds during opening? No way to know, so de-rating doesn't fix the issue.

“The strength of the harness must always be equal to or greater than the maximum force generated by the canopy during certification tests."

"A PD-113R label shows the average peak force of 3639 pounds.

The Mirage is TSO’d under TSO-C23b, Low-Speed Category (3,000lbs.)."
