Canoe/Hike: 1880's Railroad Tunnel

Recommended Posts

Here is my latest piece of writing, consisting of another trip report for the Houston Canoe Club. This one is about a short canoe paddle on the Pecos and Rio Grande Rivers to explore an 1880's railroad tunnel blasted through solid rock. It's more about old west railroad history than canoeing, but the canoe portion gave me a good excuse to write about a neat story.

Additional photos are attached, which do not appear in the story.

12 Air shaft1 4s: View from inside the tunnel, looking back past a beam of light entering from an air shaft, with sunlight from the tunnel entrance in the far background.

14 Air shaft2 2s: View from the cliff-side cave used for an air shaft, looking out over the Rio Grande River.

17 Flowers 2s: Cactus flowers

Too fuckin kewl...Thanks for sharing...Got more pictures?

That's all the good stuff from the railroad tunnel. But I've got a bunch of ancient Indian cave art photos. I guess I'll start another thread for that one, but I don't have those photos organized yet, so it will be a few days. I hiked to six different cave shelters with rock art; three I had seen before, and three were new ones for me. Amazing stuff!
