Carlsberg employees decry limits on beer at work

Scores of Carlsberg employees walked off the job Thursday after the Danish brewer tightened rules on workplace drinking.
Scores of Carlsberg workers walked off the job in protest Thursday after the Danish brewer tightened laid-back rules on workplace drinking and removed beer coolers from work sites, a company spokesman said.

The warehouse and production workers in Denmark are rebelling against the company's new alcohol policy, which allows them to drink beer only during lunch hours in the canteen. Previously, they could help themselves to beer throughout the day, from coolers placed around the work sites.

The only restriction was "that you could not be drunk at work. It was up to each and everyone to be responsible," company spokesman Jens Bekke said.

Carlsberg had mulled a stricter drinking policy for years and finally decided to impose the new rules on April 1, prompting protests from staff.

Bekke said around 800 workers went on strike Wednesday and around 250 walked off their jobs Thursday, resulting in interruptions to beer transports in and around Copenhagen.

Carlsberg's truck drivers joined the strike in sympathy — even though they are exempt from the new rules, Bekke said. The truck drivers are permitted to bring three beers from the canteen because they often don't have time to have lunch there.

The trucks have alcohol ignition locks preventing drivers from driving drunk, he added.

Hi h,

My brother spent 30 yrs working for the largest brewery in Oregon. When he started, they were allowed to drink on the job. He worked in the bottle shop where they filled them; anyone just had to reach out and grab one.

Then one day a worker was walking between the buildings and was hit & killed by a car. The worker was drunk as the proverbial skunk.

That ended all drinking on the job.

If only I were allowed to drink at work... I can tell you I wouldn't mind coming in to work everyday, but on the flip side of the coin I really wouldn't have that nice ice cold first beer to look foward to at the end of the day.

I've worked at many places where we drink as we work. There is no down side!

I usually work from home after leaving my office some time between 9 and 11pm.

Home office amenities include my Hjellegjerde recliner and fridge full of tasty micro-brews.

When I started working wireline a little over 8 years ago we'd have 'gun loading parties' where we'd arm the explosives for the next day's work over a few beers at the end of the day. I got in right on the last few months when we could do that....The company that bought us back then had a pretty strict safety policy that denied the presence of alcohol and explosives in the same place.....Go figure[:/]

I got nuthin

Reminds me of the time, back in the 80s, when the local DZ stopped selling beer at the manifest window throughout the day.
Progress indeed. >:(

Heard this from an old timer:

"I knew the sport was changing when they started telling us no more drinking during the dirt dives."
