TrophyHusband 0 #1 April 10, 2010 we've been shopping for a new washer and dryer to replace our old set. we had settled on one of two sets the were on the floor of lowes. both washers were $999 and one dryer was $899 and the other was $999. we're waiting to purchase until april 16, the day that florida's rebate program kicks in to give us a %20 rebate on the washer plus $75 for recycling our old washer. today we were in lowes for something else and saw that one of the sets was no longer there, and the other has a new price of $1199 each. this very well could be an isolated incident, or they could have conveniently jacked up prices the weekend before the rebate kicks in. fuck them. Gawain 0 #3 April 10, 2010 Um, it's not April 16th yet. Lots of retailers hold post-tax-day-refund-sale events. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! AggieDave 6 #6 April 10, 2010 Its not just the "American" way, these sorts of seller tactics have been employed in some fashion for very long time. In some cultures it is rude to simply pay an asking price. The price has been inflated to allow for bargaining. I would argue that it is human nature, not independent to any social-political boundaries that you would like to impose.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." LouDiamond 1 #7 April 10, 2010 Go in and confront them about it. Lowe's will give a 10% discount on anything to all military service members, anytime, if you ask about it. You can also tell them you can get it at Home depot for the price you quoted and they should match it."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING

JohnMitchell 16 #9 April 11, 2010 We got our new W/D GE frontloader set from a local appliance chain. The chain manager is a friend of ours, so he beat Lowes/HD's price quite nicely. I'd try some of the local appliance dealers. Good luck. I agree with you that sometimes those retailers do that stuff on purpose.
TrophyHusband 0 #10 April 11, 2010 this certain form of economic system must have worked for me. i called lowes customer service who put me in touch with the local lowes general manager. i told him that i would be purchasing a washer and dryer set on friday morning and that if he would sell me the one i had originally decided on for the price it was previously marked i would buy at lowes, otherwise i would be buying at a different store. he agreed to sell me the set for the lower price. voting with my dollars worked. TrophyHusband 0 #11 April 11, 2010 i always ask for my military discount. there's one clerk who rolls her eyes at me every time i do it. once she actually said something to me about it. when i asked if she would take advantage of a 10% discount if she could, she said that she could get the military discount but chose not to. i'm not sure what her problem is. TrophyHusband 0 #12 April 11, 2010 we also considered a ge profile at a local store for about the same amount of money. i wanted to go that direction, but meg liked the samsung better. (i do all the laundry, i'm not sure why she gets to pick). the gm i spoke with said that he was just following the market. he said all the other stores in the area raised their prices as well, so he was just following them. he refused to admit that there could possibly have had any connection to the flood of people that would be buying new appliances this friday due to the rebates, but at least he was willing to work with me. kawisixer01 0 #13 April 11, 2010 look around for a scratch and dent clearinghouse close by. We have one the next town over and it rocks. Stuff is really cheap and most has a scratch or dent on the side. Whoopty doo, most of the scratches and dents will never be seen due to them being on the side facing the wall or the other machine. I've seen stuff as cheap as just over half off list price.

Ya see. It never hurts to ask and all they can say is no. In todays economy, stores are more willing to bargain with a customer than before because they would rather make the sale than lose it to the competition. In other parts of the world, just because the merchant asks for a certain prices doesn't mean thats the lowest he'll take for it. The art of haggling in the US has all but disappeared( well maybe not at flea markets)and people aren't accustomed to asking a chain store to lower the marked price. The stores realize most people won't ask just because it's not something we typically do in the US but are willing to make concessions if asked and it's within reason. They know people are letting their dollars talk for them and will take their business elsewhere if they don't play ball with the customer."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING

JerryBaumchen 1,468 #18 April 11, 2010 Hi Trophy, Based upon my daughter's & her husband's experience & the experiences of some other friends, I recommend that no one buy appliances from these high volume discount chain stores. The goods are usually the lower end of the mfrs line of goods. Go to a reputable appliance store, select a good product(s) and then start discussing the price. The 'crap' from Lowe's and/or Home Depot usually just breaks down way too soon and then you really have not saved any money. Just my thoughts, but then I spent 30 + yrs working in quality control . . . JerryBaumchen PS) We had a sign at the office that said, "We have two types of oats; that which is new in the bucket or that which has been through the horse once." (i do all the laundry, i'm not sure why she gets to pick). Be careful with Samsung. I bought a new Samsung washer and dryer (smaller front loaders) in 2005. The dryer was fine for about 3 years and then the belt broke. I replaced that belt every 2 months until I replaced the dryer completely last year with an LG. The washer is still running fine but I will be replacing it with the matching LG washer soon (the Samsung is just too small for me now).'Shell
