CobraRover 0 #1 May 3, 2010 Well, the worlds greatest competition for me and most other people in the world - the World Cup. Im curious how you guys in the states rate it, considering that Football is not the number 1 sport over there like it is in most other countries. In England and Spain where I've been living now for 5 years (and the rest of Europe and around 90% of the rest of the countries in the world) it's a MASSIVE thing and the hype surrounding it all is huge. We get ridiculously passionate about it all. The build up to it has been going on for around a year now, and I know myself that I can't wait. I'm really looking forward to our first group game, England vs USA, but are you guys really all that bothered?

Not quite sure if im right about this one, but doesnt that competition involve people of all different nationalities? If so, then they have no reason not to refer to it as "universe", because as it stands, im not aware of anything living off planet earth to take that given title away from the winner. Quote Same reason YOU just called soccer "The worlds greatest competition . . ." To stay on subject, forget the "greatest" part - the word "worlds" is in there because it involves a lot of countries from all around the world. Sorry to be an arse, but you still havent explained to me why you call something a world series when there is only 1 country directly involved in it
Southern_Man 0 #11 May 3, 2010 At the time the World Series was started America was really the only country that played baseball. It's mostly about the hype, though. See here for history: http://roadsidephotos.sabr.org/baseball/name.htm I really like soccer (association football) and am eager to watch the World Cup this summer but I am definitely in a minority here. It is harder to be a big fan of international sports because the coverage isnt' as good and the times are often inconvenient (games this summer will start very early in the AM)"What if there were no hypothetical questions?" Although a lot of people in the USA don't see it as a big sport, you've produced some superb players over the years. One of my personal favorites, probably one of the best Goal Keepers my team (Blackburn Rovers) has ever had - Brad Freidel. Legend - was a sad day for me when he left us :(

The most American thing about baseball is the capitalism, with the players and teams going where the money is. America likes baseball and has enough money to provide most of $6,600,000,000 in revenues for Major League Baseball over 2009 in spite of the recession.
