Buffalo River, Arkansas

Looks like it was a great trip!

And when you referenced "And then there were the blood-curdling screams from some kind of animal fight, that kept occurring over and over again, all night long"...

Last year when I was deer hunting in MS, the wild feral hogs make a noise that's very similar. Almost a scream... eerie as hell in the woods. Maybe what you heard?

My favorite time of year to go is in the winter up until March when no one wants to get out on it. Its like stepping back a hundred years in time. Glad you had a great trip... nothing better than fresh caught trout for dinner.
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

We'll never know for sure. As we sat there listening to it repeatedly, we tried to guess what kind of animals would make that sound. I thought of wild pigs, while another leading contender was bobcats. It was so creepy I didn't want to sneak through the woods to try and find it in person, unarmed.

That would have been neat! I envy you having a beautiful river like that nearby that you can hop on any time you wish.

Yep, one of the reasons I go outdoors is to get away from mobs of people. So I don't like finding a mob where I'm at in the outdoors. I understand the Buffalo River gets like that in the summer. We actually had a pretty quiet time. There was one large group of 40 school kids with 20 canoes, and other than that we just saw people in one's or two's.

And all that undeveloped land really is like seeing America as it once was, stepping back in time. A very wonderful experience.
