rise in USPA memberships? 3d human flight

Recommended Posts

so a little while back in parachutist magazine they did a cool little page about the spike in new USPA memberships (increase in new skydivers) after the movie point break was released.
as most of you know theres a new 3D human flight moving coming out all about skydiving. should we except whuffos to be flooding our dropzones wanting to do tandems and AFF/ w.e. is equivalent?

thoughts...opinions on the topic?

movie trailer:

No it won't. Not like Point Break did.

The reason is that this movie will have a very limited audience. Also, it shows a lot of neat stuff in the air, but it doesn't have the movie emotions with characters that the audience can relate with.

+1 on that.

In order to succeed the movie has to have some famous actor(s), story that most of the wuffos can relate, and hype.
I very much like the trailer though, but most of the people can`t see the difference between beginner belly jump and champion VRW. [:/]
If the movie would be teenage romantic comedy that is happening at the DZ between Megan Fox and _________, that would be different story. ;)

Dirty old AFF-I/Rigger who lives on the DZ in an old smelly trailer?

Well, we've got to make it realistic, right?

Megan Fox and airtwardo the dirty ole man, that would be different story. ;)

When does filming begin?? >:(

I see you filled out the blanks ;) In the correct way.

It could be "generation gap" love story. ;)
With lots of skydiving in between (some nude jumps of course made by __________________). Couple of fistfights in the middle. And it got to have sad ending.

If you think of it, it could be a blockbuster. :P

Yes the phones will be busy at the dz when this movie comes out.

I predict we will see a more intelligent group coming to the dz. Engineers, pilots etc. Not the usual posers that think we can talk in freefall.

It will be an older crowd that has been putting off the big leap.... Probably a lot of them have made a tandem and never got around to persuing the sport.

It will be interesting to bump this thread after the movies comes out. Aggie Dave, I think you're wrong. This movie has a lot invested. They will spend a lot on marketing when it's time.

Thanks to all those involved in making the movie. You have done a lot to promote the sport.:)

There ya go! :)

It could be a Gypsy Moths remake, I could take Megan under my 'wing'.....show her the In's & outs, the ups & downs of professional demo jumping!

I LIKE IT! B|

This new movie will probably have a similar impact to what Adrenaline Rush had. Which is to say not much. Not wide enough audience.

Honestly, I hope I am proven wrong, that would be good for the sport in the short term. It does look like an interesting movie and it will be fun to watch, I just hope there's some good swooping in it! Freeflying is neat, but swooping, now that's movie material!

littel to NO impact...freeflying does not have the "birdliek" visual that the human eye finds beautiful, Wofo's can not understand the extra skill involved, they are looking from the outside looking in...freeeflying is not Pretty...(wait)

Artistic, YES, especially once you been there...pretty? No, ....Unless Pat Works organises it! ;)(he mixes it up) (belly and freefly)

You clearly missed who its being marketed towards.. the marketing is going to be towards the Gen Y/Gen Z groups not the older crowd. I predict you'll have a ton more people asking about flying a wingsuit while base jumping before their first jump since that is all they want to do after seeing proximity flying and some of the visuals that are occurring with that.

I resent that, some of my best conversations where in freefall.

You wouldn't have to bounce like Burt, would ya?[:/]

If Megan Fox were to bounce like Deborah Kerr then it's the LEAST I can do!;)

The movie is not all freeflying. It will have BASE and proximity flying and wingsuit formations. Crazy stuff never seen before in other videos

Like others have mentioned, the general public isn't as impressed with cutting edge skydiving as skydivers are. They don't understand the difference in skill required between making a simple 4-way jump, and wingsuiting down a mountain. A skydiver is a skydiver to the gen. pop.

Point Break worked as well as it did because it smuggled some skydiving into a big Hollywood picture. Big stars, big budget, lots of movie studio promotion made it a box office smash. 99% of the people who saw it didn't go for, or even know there were skydiving scenes. That's how the industry got a spike, millions of unsuspecting people made a 'speed star' with Swayze and Keanu, and learned about something new.

This new movie appears very short on stars, budget (in Hollywood terms) and story. It's going to appeal to skydivers, and skydiver-like people. Nobody is going to become 'aware' of skydiving by seeing this movie, they're already going to be familiar with the sport.

Industry changing ability aside, it looks like a cool movie, and I'll catch it for sure whenever it comes out.
