Car audio experts?

Recommended Posts

Need some help upgrading the audio in my boat, specifically installing a new system.

What exists today is the old style in dash cassette player that basically mounts using the posts for volume and tuning. On new units those posts are non existant. How do you mount newer units?

Post mounted OMG you must be as old as Kallend:ph34r:

Most ICE units now come with a purpose made mounting thingys.
I imagine that being a boat the facia is either wood veneer or fiber glass
you have to make a template just a wee bit smaller than the mounting that comes with the
ICE unit, cut a rectangular hole and file to the correct size.
Most mountings come with a threaded stud at the bottom to hold it secure.
With a little inginuity make a "l" or elongated "u" shaped bracket, with several holes drilled in it
and securly fix it to the facia. the ICE mounting thingy needs to be fixed to the bracket
via the threaded stud, thats to hold it secure.

Wiring connections are a whole different story.

I also got a car audio question - this time related to a car.... :P

2001 Mitsubishi Spyder; want to swap out the original stereo unit. The wiring for the factory fitted one is confusing me slightly... see attached pic.

I know what they all are in circle 1 (through web searches), and circle 3 are the wires to the seperate amp - but what are the wires in circle 2? Haven't been able to find anything on those... If you can't tell from the pic, they are all solid (no stripes) and are red, black, brown and white.

Any help appreciated! And advice on whether I should use the existing amp, or run the speaker cables to the new unit (and have to mess with crossovers for the tweaters etc).

Looking at the size and colors of the wires, I would say power most likely.

Does your car have an auto antenna (comes up when you turn the radio on)?

Those would be your power/ground/ignition controlled on-off wires. You should probably get one of these (see link) and your life will be less complicated.

Don't quote me on this but as miller said power leads
red=permanant live, black=ground, brown=from contact switch (live when key is turned)
white could be antena, but in my experience the antena is usually yellow.

Thanks both - but unfortunately not that easy I'm afraid....

The (only) info I found on the web was this:

Radio Constant 12V+ Wire: Orange/Black
Radio Switched 12V+ Wire: White/Black
Radio Ground Wire: Chassis
Radio Illumination Wire: Green/White
Radio Dimmer Wire: n/a
Radio Amplifier Trigger Wire: n/a
Radio Antenna Trigger Wire: Pink
(speaker wire information removed because they are in #3)

...which, based on wiring colours, puts all the power/antenna stuff in #1 - even if logically it looks like #2.

Thanks for the harness link; I also found one that also includes the link to the amp - but either way I still don't know what is in #2 and don't think I should ignore them without knowing what they are....

Get the harness. When you do all you have to do is plug it into the vehicle factory radio harness and the aftermarket one will come with instructions on what ALL the wires are if not actually label the wires individually. I usually do it this way unless I'm running a custom setup (ie my car all the speakers are driven by aftermarket amps so I just rewired the entire audio system) and have had almost no problems.

Be thankfull you don't have my car. The radio unit is mounted in a well under the passengers seat,
the display is intergral with the dash and the controls are on a stalk under the steering wheel.
to top it all it's a crappy radio,

my solution is a wifi mp3 player tuned to a vacant slot on FM.
