davjohns 1 #3 May 19, 2010 Wow! That took some guts to actually ask for that. I can't imagine it having any success. And those people paid taxes on the money. How will the county account for that? The feds? I would guess the recovery will cost more than the loss.I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.
skydiver30960 0 #4 May 19, 2010 QuoteEmployees can apply the money to vacation leave or make a cash payment. This is the last sentence of the story, and the most telling. My guess is they aren't being "asked." Instead, they'll have the choice of paying the cash back or they'll just find their vacation time deducted by the appropriate amount on an upcoming check. I had a company I worked for dock my pay post-tax by mistake, then return it pre-tax. The idiot doing payroll had a hard time understanding what my beef was. riggerrob 643 #8 May 20, 2010 Under British Columbia law, if a boss over-pays an employee, the boss is not allowed to deduct that over-payment from later pay-checks. IOW if a boss over-pays, that is his problem.
jverley 1 #9 May 21, 2010 I do payroll for a living. Technically if you are overpaid in one year and repay it in a subsequent year you must remained taxed for the initial year because the IRS deems that you had use of the money and therefore it was taxable. You cannot get a corrected W-2 for the Income Tax. These employees should just refuse to pay as the statute of limitations for any claim has long since passed. The county is just trying to close their budget situation by any means possible and if someone repays voluntarily that helps.John Arizona Hiking Trails

That makes perfect sense. Mine was different in that she took the money out on one paycheck after showing it as income, then put it back in as additional income on my next paycheck. In other words, showing the same $$ as income twice.
