Scary Indy Crash

Recommended Posts

THAT was just fuckin' crazy town when it comes to a last couple of laps. Can you imagine the thoughts going through his head just a second before ("oh man I could win this!") to just a second later?

Patience, the fewest mistakes and cool under pressure is what wins the race.

The crash technology has improved so much in recent times.

As good as it is, that was very close to killing two drivers. I can't even imagine being the car below and watching the out of control flying car crashing into the fence and then heading toward my head.

Very true, but I think (guess?) that that would have been a fatal crash not too long ago.

And I don't think the technology will ever exist that would have prevented it from being fatal if the top car had been a foot or so lower.

There have been a number of near-misses like this over the years. In one, the wheel of the car on top left skid marks on the lower drivers helmet. I think it was Michael Andretti, but I couldn't find it in a quick search.

What, is this like a lame version of Formula 1?

I dunno. Is the 5k track race a lame version of a marathon just because it takes place on an oval track?

Don't be so parochial. LOTS of races go fast and turn left; bicycles, horses, ice skaters, runners. Lame, LAME excuse for an argument.

EPBA

Yes, the 5k race is a lame version of a real marathon. Spheres are also just lame versions of dodecahedrons.

It was a joke Quade, I'm sure your poor excuses for real races are actually very very good. Would it have helped if I'd put this guy :D after my post?

It's a different style of race. Much more top speed than corners on the oval tracks (although Indy cars do road tracks too). Momentum management and drafting play a big part.

Also far far different cars. Much less sophisticated. It wasn't too many years ago that they had pushrod operated valvetrains in the motors.
Also a lot cheaper to run. Cheaper even than NASCAR.

Although F1 is very exciting from a technical standpoint (both cars and drivers), from a spectator standpoint it isn't a lot of fun to watch. Very little passing, mainly just "follow the leader". Whoever gets through the first turn in the lead without crashing will win the race unless he makes a mistake.

I prefer to watch the "lesser" classes of racing. Far more fun to watch because of the action (not crashes, the drivers duelling it out).
The local track is a lot of fun to go to on Thursday nights. The drivers aren't all that skilled, the cars aren't all that great, but the action is a blast. Guys driving with a lot of passion.

You obviously haven't seen todays race in Turkey, quite possibly the best of the season and no shortage of duelling! Though I'll grant you, 'processional' may be a word associated with F1 to a greater extent than with other motor sports. That being said, the atmosphere at an F1 race is unlike one I've ever encountered anywhere else.

Anyway I'm a huge petrolhead. F1, Moto GP, even DTM, love them all. I just don't see the appeal of watching cars constantly going in circles, at least not as much as i see the appeal of circuits that really challenge the racers both physically and mentally, as well as the cars. But who knows, maybe if I catch one next time I'm stateside I'll feel differently.

Real race cars don't have computers. ;)

Dirt track winged sprint cars make Indy and F1 look like grandma on her way to a tea party in comparison.
