No Way to Treat a Stearman . . .

Recommended Posts

Does it look like the brakes were locked up before touchdown? It looks like there was a whisp of smoke after the bounce of the left main, and then immediate smoke upon the actual touchdown. I know jest will 'smoke' the tires on touchdown, but that's at 120+ knots while the Stearman looked like it was doing about 40.

Maybe an in-flight problem caused in increase in pressure in the brake system? The article mentioned this was part of a multi-plane promotional flight landing at Reagan Intl., so I would assume the pilot is not a 'newbie'. I'm not sure if there are brakes in both seats of the Stearman, but even if there was I would think that the pillot might feel the passenger wailing on the pedals hard enough to lock up the wheels.

I do like how they claim only damage to the tail, upper wing and prop, and they leave out the part about the very expensive prop-strike inspection and repair to the big radial up front.

Yes, the guy in the front seat, a reporter of some sort in this case, normally has access to full controls, but the rudder pedals (and the brakes attached to them) along with the stick can be easily removed and that's what most operators do when giving joy rides to non-pilots.

Either the passenger braced himself with his feet at some point after touchdown (and activated the brakes) or the pilot was trying to land short, or keep the tail in the air, and just blew it. But that sounds unlikely. And so does mechanical failure. Those brake systems are fairly simple and when they do fail it's always in the no brake direction. And since they didn't swerve it would be a million to one both brakes locked up on their own at the same time.

Yeah, they almost surely tweaked the crankshaft, so that motor is toast.

>>they expected students to flip them on landing
I read that crock of bull on CNN too. Flip one once, or even ground loop a landing more than once and they'd tell you to pack your trash and "Have fun in the infantry . . . !"

Initial military training was always better than that. They never expected students to crash, not even when they were cranking out pilots by the boatload.

Military flight training didn't go into the dumper until around the time Bush ducked Vietnam for light duty in the Texas ANG . . . LOL!

Stolen from the Stearman facebook page
"Woke this morn' to a roarin' Stearman... how far off, I couldn't determine... started hummin' a tune from nineteen-forty-two... ain't it funny how a flight moves... when you just don't have a plane to choose... strange how a flight moves... airshows closin' in..." (a bit o' Seger for Stearmans)
