Doggy Heaven!

Recommended Posts

Hillhaven Ruby's Riley

Tomorrow I have to have Riley, my 14 year old German Shorthair, put to sleep. The cancer has gotten so bad that she is having trouble getting comfortable. She is one of the best dogs I’ve ever had the pleasure of hunting over. We never lost a bird when she was near! She has a great personality and loves people. Basically, she’s a 60lb. lap dog that can hunt!

I still have Ruby (10 years old today), a puppy from her last litter. Ruby, who has never left her moms side, will miss her. Ruby and I will take Riley’s remains to this little spot up in Northern Minnesota where she used to love breaking up grouse coveys. If she could talk, I know Riley would tell you that that spot is her “Doggy Heaven”!

Riley is lucky to have you. :)
I know what it's like to have to make that decision. It's not easy. But it's the best gift you can give them.

Hugs to you and yours. There's a big white guy named Herc up there waiting to welcome Riley ... they'll get along just fine. :)

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

My heart felt condolences. It is never easy especially with a dog you have had for so long. It is never easy but some dogs are just harder to put down than others. I have had to put down a couple of dogs. The first being the puppy my parents gave me for my 5th birthday. I had to come home from college and put him down just after my 18th birthday. That was a tough one. I cried like a baby all the way to the vets office. I have two labs now and the oldest one is 10 and she has been a very special dog. We have been thru times together. Friends and lovers come and go but she is still by my side. I dread the day I have to put her down. I am going to be a wreck.
Damn shell! that was very nice but now i have to explain to people at work why I have tears in my eyes. But it was beautiful none the less.

I know what you're going through and my condolences to you. Six weeks ago, we had to put our little spaniel mix, who was 16, put to sleep. We get so attached to our pets because they are 'family'. They really are our best friends. At least, Riley won't be in pain anymore.

One of the most difficult decisions one has to make ... I have been putting off letting go of my sick little rescue for months ... I'm not strong enough just yet [:/] ...

Wishing you courage ... and may Riley run free in "Doggy Heaven" forever :)

O

As hard as it may be to let them go, if it's time, it's time. Do what's best for them.

The longer you wait, the harder it becomes .... for both of you.
