skymama 37 #1 August 4, 2010 The government has recommended that adults have no more than 1500 mg. of sodium per day. I watch my weight closely and try to control how many calories and fat grams I consume, but I have to admit that I've never really paid attention to the sodium content of the food. This morning, I decided to read the labels of everything I eat for a typical day. I figured out that by dinner time I have already consumed about 1000 mg! The biggest culprits were 100 calorie wheat bread thins and feta cheese. There's even sodium in my low-fat yogurt and egg. What the hell is sodium doing in my egg, it's an egg! So, check your sodium levels for a day, I think you'll be surprised too. I'd especially be interested in the reports from those of you who eat out a lot. I'll definitely be reading the lables more closely after this! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

Southern_Man 0 #5 August 4, 2010 I stay away from prepared foods as much as possible. I also usually avoid eating out. Both of those are major sources of sodium. I do not monitor mine (maybe I would be surprised if I did). If I eat a lot of sodium I do not feel good, though. When I am running (which I haven't been lately) good mileage I have to be sure to get enough sodium, especially in the summer."What if there were no hypothetical questions?" Class was a lonnng time ago, but i seem to remember that the kidneys filter and eliminate as needed, any surplus salt levels. NWFlyer 2 #12 August 4, 2010 Stay away from the processed crap. Loaded with stuff you don't need, especially sodium. I have a hot lunch almost every day but it's almost never out of a box ... I just make extra of whatever I'm cooking for dinner and put some in a plastic container for work the next day or two. Or I'll cook up a crock pot full of soup or chili and freeze it in small containers. Read "In Defense of Food" or "Food Rules" by Michael Pollan or "The End of Overeating" by David Kessler. All of them are pretty eye-opening about the food industry and the stuff you're eating if you eat mostly packaged foods. What the hell is a low-fat egg anyway? Whatever happened to cracking the shell of a regular egg? Eggs should not be poured out of a carton. And yogurt should have two ingredients, not twenty. Buy lowfat plain yogurt and add honey and/or fruit to it."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. skymama 37 #13 August 4, 2010 Didn't mean to imply that I eat low fat eggs. It's just a regular ol' egg that I hard boil. I eat a salad every day for lunch, that's what I have a sprinkle of Feta cheese on. I just saw that I have to count the sodium in the dressing I use. Even though I use very little, it still adds up. The yogurt I bought is light Activia and I add blueberries to it. My diet is very good and I get an A+ from my doctor at my physicals. I'm just shocked at what has sodium in it that I never considered would have it. The highest sodium count that I've had today is from the 100 calorie wheat sandwich thin! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

BillyVance 35 #15 August 4, 2010 Without checking the facts, am I correct in assuming that sodium in some form or another works as a preservative in prepackaged foods? A documentary on TV was showing how settlers in the 1500's and 1600's eked out their living. One thing was fishing and shipping the fish packed in salt in barrels back to Europe. There was no refrigeration of any kind as far as I know back in those days."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban

I just see so many people eating the processed egg crap that comes out of a carton ... eggs are awesome in their natural forms! As for salad dressing, I mostly use plain ol' oil and vinegar, or there's a couple I like from Trader Joe's that need to be refrigerated so the preservatives are low. Sodium is in almost all processed foods. And High Fructose Corn Syrup sneaks into a lot of foods too even ones that aren't "sweet." It's a preservative, but it's also used (along with lots of other ingredients) to make people want to eat more of a product. gemini 0 #21 August 5, 2010 When I went on BP medication, the Dr told me to excercise portion control and cut out as much sodium as I could. I started watching what I was eating and had to drop the red bull, apple pies, biscuits, gravies, etc. I never knew there was so much salt in such small portions.
