If I ever hit it big.....Wind Tunned IN NYC

Recommended Posts

I'm making reservations for 4 nights in NYC for work.
And it just an amazing thing. Whay has no ne ever built a wind tunnel in NYC?
If i ever hit the numbers I'm going to build a tunnel where by one of the glass walls faces the street!

Think of the money to build in that area also ;) To build anything new you have to tear something down first. With a new tunnel already costing 7+ million with out any tear down costs, its a long shot to build in the city.

There were plans being floated around at one point about building a tunnel on a barge and parking it on the docks but that project died it seems.

NO way bro, the city is dead!
You should see what time square has become.
Virgin is out and so are some of the other large stores.
You could if you hit say $50mill take a solid $10 and build one and most likely pull all that money back in about 4 years!
think of a two tunnel system. one on ground level and one on say the second floor. They would have to be about 3m-4m across. Charge $50 a min....and yes people will pay that much. Another $30 for pictures and bada bing bada boom! The worlds best location! And if you do it right and keep it running 7am-well past midnight you could even make the money faster. And since there are two full systems sitting collecting dust in NJ.....:)Shah needs the worlds best crack pipe! FYI half price for friends ;)

Think...time quare new years ever indoor wind tunnel party!

$50 bucks a minute isn't a party, its highway robbery... Hell, even $25/min is :S

Tunnels are pretty tall. So it would be more like one chamber on the 3rd floor and one on the 10th floor. (Unless you build them so the air moves horizontally, but then they wouldn't be as much fun.)

Build me a tracking tunnel!!!

You can track in a tunnel.
I've done it!

It would take more than that. It's not just the real estate for the building itself, nobody wants to be located right next to a tunnel. The surrounding real estate would take a hit in value, and the city would probably never grant you a permit. If you could buy enough land so you had a 'buffer zone' between you and the neighbors, that would be one thing, but the way people live on top of each other in the city, you could never just buy a biulding and put one in.

you mean there are wind tunnels in NJ already? Why are they gathering dust?

$50 bucks a minute? Screw you. I'll go make a 60 second freefall for less than half that.:P

yeah they are sitting on the docks I'm told still in their boxes just gathering dust.
No it would be $50 for those freakign tourists man!
Those morons come to NYC to do two things, getl ost and spend money.
As for sound? Have you been to NYC? It's not a quiet place! That and the buildings are built like brick shit houses! You just have to gut one and get it lined up.
But as for sound? The skyventure system in montreal is so quiet. It's amazing!
Hey it's just a dream.

I would rather check out the indoor swimming pool night club/bar in Times Square. Pool Party! B|

Do you think you have the body to support such an andventure? It's NYC.
Now a wind tunnel that looks out over time square at night! How cool would that be!

Bet you can't get an 8-way in the air for $50!

And you can get the 8 way in a 9'-12' tunnel? (more than one or two blocks)

In time square how cool would that be! At night dim the lights so you can see the city? :)

I've wanted a DZ with a wind tunnel. Any time there is a weather hold, you jump in the tunnel. Seems simple to me. The problem is finding a location that will justify the expenditure to build. It has to be close to a major tourist draw, but away from large airports. That gets tricky.

Then, if the hangar had an indoor climbing wall, was next to a body of water to jump into / SCUBA, with running water to kayak; an indoor range; archery range, motorcycle track; hang gliding; martial arts studio....

And then David realized he was in heaven.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Well they way I look at it is this.
Foot traffic.
Where else in the world do you get the number of tourists year around as you do in NYC?
The city is in a bind with the large stores leaving.
and the buildings they are leavign behind are built like brick shit houses. Add to it that the city by it's nature is a loud place and TADA!
New years boogie at Time Square :-)

Foot traffic is indeed nice. But keep in mind you are competing with people who will happily pay $8 for a beer so they can sit near Times Square. And there are a LOT more of them than there are people who want to get into a wind tunnel.

Depends on from which perspective you're talking. Real estate costs in NYC aside, the foot traffic may make the business worthwhile from the standpoint of the business owners/investors. But if it's going to get tons of foot traffic from tourists who just want to do a once-off, that might hog up so many time slots that it won't be user-friendly to skydivers and serious tunnel flyers.

On the East coast, there's no tunnel between N. Hampshire and Raeford, NC to service the huge population region from greater NYC through greater Washington, DC. A venue within reasonable drive time from anywhere in the Mid Atlantic, but that won't get swamped with nothing but tourists, would make the most sense.

Not if it is a private club selling memberships to people with USPA/equivalent licenses. ???
