davjohns 1 #26 July 6, 2010 I drive a Jeep Wrangler. Locking it is silly. I just don't leave anything in it of value. At the DZ, I leave the keys on the dash in case anyone needs to move it for some reason. Still, after the poll that showed most people around here wouldn't tell me if I was sleeping with a girl that had an STD, I'm not feeling too comfortable.I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.
stayhigh 2 #27 July 6, 2010 at my dz, only time people complain about missing shit is during boogie time. other than that did you really got stolen or did you misplace it somewhere??? cause not that many people steal packing mats, but i've heard alot of that stories. oh and pull up cord or pack boy as well.Bernie Sanders for President 2016

DFWAJG 4 #30 July 6, 2010 I'm not so worried about my gear. It's Neon Pink. You can't miss it. If anyone tries to sell it, I know I would be contacted. A few years ago, I sold my original rig to a chick from Canada who went to Zhills for the Christmas boogie. People were calling me to confirm that I had sold my rig. And everyone thinks I'm silly to wear such bright colors.
TiaDanger 0 #31 July 6, 2010 When I was doing AFF, somebody broke into my car and stole mine and my mom's backpacks. I was so jacked up from my jumps that day that we didn't even notice until we left the DZ:( My bag had ALL my MCAT study material in it, I was so pissed off. Months of notes and study guides gone. My mom is a police officer, and thank god she didn't have her gun with her, but she still lost her wallet, all police ID, and her federal concealed weapons permits. Talk about being discouraged right off the get go. They later busted transient illegals who were combing random parking lots for stuff to steal and sell. Even though it wasn't skydivers who took our stuff, I am now extra careful every time I go to the DZ...nothing gets left in the car and my bag is always zipped up so my belongings are concealed. And for the record: the appropriate ranking of cool modes of transportation is jet pack, hover board, transporter, Batmobile, and THEN giant ant. JohnMitchell 16 #35 July 6, 2010 Quoteat my dz, only time people complain about missing shit is during boogie time. other than that did you really got stolen or did you misplace it somewhere??? The altimeter, busy 4th of July day, lots of transients. It was with our gear, then it wasn't. Stolen, misplaced, or mistakenly taken? If you ain't got video, who knows? The battery and charger was plugged into the wall, with name labels on it. Left for several weeks (long story), maybe somebody figured it fit their Sony also. Peel the labels and go. Certainly not Earth shattering or life changing, just sad.
NovaTTT 2 #36 July 6, 2010 I keep a rigger's kit in my car and usually have a client rig or two in there as well. I lock up not because of the jumpers, but because of the large number of people coming and going because of tandems. In years past this wasn't an issue, but just as I lock up at the mall or wherever, I now do so at the DZ if it's a busy tandem day."Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." rehmwa 2 #37 July 6, 2010 QuoteIn our tight-knit, trusting sport, theft still occurs occasionally. there's your mistake - I don't get why people think that skydivers are any better or any worse than the rest of the population's cross section. kallend 2,147 #38 July 6, 2010 My wallet was stolen at the 2001 Nationals at Eloy. That is my only experience with theft at a DZ.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
wmw999 2,587 #39 July 6, 2010 I've had a rigger's kit, helmet, weights, and weight belt go missing. The weight belt came back, nothing else ever did. The helmet and weights were partly my fault because I left them out when I was gone from the DZ for about 3 weeks. The rigger's kit was 30 years ago, so it's not just nowadays. I leave my gear on the floor while I"m jumping, and my purse (generally) hanging in my (unlocked) locker. The car is locked, and when I leave so is the locker. I'm not going to be paranoid, I'll trust most people, and I'll be careful enough that I don't have to ruin that faith real often. Bolas 5 #41 July 6, 2010 Quote Something about where I stash my keys in another thread got me to thinking. In our tight-knit, trusting sport, theft still occurs occasionally. What's been your experiences, and what do you do to protect your valuables? Bolas, I don't want you answering "I wear a cup." I jump a Racer so just keep all my valuables beneath it. wmw999 2,587 #43 July 6, 2010 That never really occurred to me then, and now I haven't been an active rigger in a long time. But no, I never saw or heard of a reserve sealed with my symbol. But, ya know -- if someone had a problem with a reserve, the rigger's log would pretty clearly show if it was faked. Snowwhite 0 #45 July 6, 2010 sad to say this happens, but it does. It really hurts me when it does, because I think of most skydivers as family, and would usually help them out if they needed it. When someone takes one little itty bitty thing that doesn't belong to them, say a bumper sticker, a waiver, or some dz poster, I NEVER trust them again. I figure if they steal small, they will steal big if given a chance.skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com
