Talk your way out of THIS speeding ticket

Again, there are roads out there that people know well, and can safely drive at very high speeds. You will never be able to completely eliminate all risk, but it is like that at a track too. I am not saying that some teenager should buy the next greatest supercar and see how fast they can go right off the lot.

There is a long straight stretch of road near me, if I am out at midnight, I can see headlights 8 miles away, easily, cause it's flat entire way. 55mph zone, I've had it to 157mph and even above several times. I know every single bump in the road, I know how my car reacts to those bumps. I know where every sign, every mailbox, every rut in the shoulder is. If someone is coming I don't do it. I have a car, and tires rated for those speeds. It is a rural road, all the farms houses have long drives set way back from highway. I am at no risk to anyone but myself.

Thats exactly why when I pull over on the side of a freeway in the middle of nowhere, I turn the 4 ways on (with driving lights already on) and put a reflective belt on.

At those speeds, you are going (if my math memory serves me) about 235 feet per second, with my reflective belt alone, (reflects light up to 1000 feet) you would see me ~4.25 seconds before you were passing me.

IIRC, the reaction time from your eye seeing, and your brain saying 'oh shit', to you moving your foot is ~1.5 seconds, then you gotta slow that mass down, which would take way more than the other 2.75 seconds.

Not trying to be a buzzkill or anything, but think of the old lady that has a blown tire in the middle of the night, or one whos engine is dead and the battery wont power the lights.

But damn, 8 miles in just under 3 minutes would make my trip home alot quicker.

Road has massive wide shoulders on it. They could easily pull off, and have plenty of room to walk around their car without leaving shoulder. Besides...when I do my highspeed runs through there, to give me the extra few feet from animals that may be on side of road, I go right down the middle of the road.

I bought a fast car, I want to enjoy it.

Sorry, but that sounds like selfish, self absorbed BS.

If you can afford that car you can afford the track time to enjoy your "fast car". That is where responsible people who give a shit about the rest of people around them go to play with their fast cars.

If your doing that on public roads your being reckless. Just man up and admit it. Driving my wicked cool fast car, wicked fast, is more important than the person I may kill.

Sorry I killed your dad, I got a fast car.
Sorry I killed your dog, I got a fast car.
Sorry I killed myself and you have to live with the image of cleaning up my carnage because something happened that I had no chance of avoiding, I got a fast car.

:o:S

Just got word from my girlfriend's niece whose friend just killed himself doing similar stuff in a fast car. Young and dumb and I am sure he had it all figured out too. Good thing he didn't plow into anyone else.

I've minimized the risk to a point that I am comfortable with.

I'm sure that this guy said the same thing.

I'm pretty sure these guys did too.

Have you ever been to a high speed accident scene?

Just like I won't be able to change your views, nothing you say is going to change mine. I've minimized the risk to a point that I am comfortable with.

I don't want to change your views, you already made it very clear that you have it all figured out. :D

I only want to point out a very straight forward observation. You are putting you desire to drive your car fast on public roads, ahead of others lives, saftey, personal property, and wellbeing.

Any belief that you have minimized the risk is bullshit because you can completely minimize the risk to the people that live on the road by going to a track, and you are making their choices for them.

Just own up to that, because that is what you are doing.

If you are so confident in your risk assesment put your money where your mouth is. Go knock on some doors on this route, and tell the people what you told us, that you are going to drive past their property in excess of 150 mph and you have it all worked out.

Would you like some one to drive 150 mph past your house where you are living?

Come join us on the race tracks with your car. There you can actually push the car to your limits in a relatively safe environment, you can enjoy the extreme speeds of your car and you won't be endangering the lives of innocent people.

BTW you don't have to be a formal race car driver to drive your car on the track.

go find a track before you kill someone

I lived off of a long stretch of rural road with long driveways. When we were kids, sometimes we'd ride our bicycles at night from town back home after a day.

and then there were the deer, dogs, etc.

totally selfish and irresponsible, call it 'fun' if you like, but if you kill someone, hopefully you fix it at that time so you don't get to drive again

it still amazes me the idiotic rationalization I see here about driving fast - suck it up and pay for the track and the training to do it right

and as the only person in the world, did you also make sure you've minimized the risk to the people living on that road and others that use it?

what are you, 14?

Hopefully no one is stupid enough to actually have stopped in the middle of the road rather than pulling off. It'd sure suck for both them and you. Yeah, it's a dumb thing to do.

So is going that kind of speed on public roads. You're only protecting yourself from people who follow the rules. What happens if another guy likes to speed going the other way?

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Like 150 mph vs 150 mph? 300 mph closing speed. :S
