Helmet for skydiving

Recommended Posts

There have been a good handful of jumpers out there that have used snowboarding helmets and hockey helmets for jumping over the years.

Out of curiosity, why this helmet? You'll have to modify the helmet or somehow strap something to the outside of the helmet possibly to use any sort of dytter, for instance. If you're looking for better protection then most skydiving helmets, why not a pro-tec?

If this helmet has some sort of goggle retention strap or hook on it then you'll really want to cut it off as well.

Eitherway it looks like a decent helmet, although possibly sort of an odd shape for skydiving use. With that said for about a year I used a skateboarding 1/2 shell helmet for jumping in, and although it wasn't the best it worked for what I could afford right then (it was something like $15).

Not specifically about this helmet, but I now use a downhill ski racing helmet which gives me a lot more protection than my old pro-tec.

As long as you remove all snag points I would definitely recommend ski/snow helmets for use in skydiving. Most skydiving specific helmets are built to satisfy "must wear a helmet" rules as opposed to offering any real protection. Plus the ski/snow selection looks cooler B|

Okay, ski/snowboard helmets never look right (or cool;)) to an old fart like me. But at least they are made to some standard. A protec is pretty good for what we need. An Oregon Aero retrofit liner makes it even better. Of course half the time I wear my frap hat.:P I haven't figured out why nobody wears a hockey helmet (minus the cage or face shield) any more. When I started it was motorcycle helmets for the newbies and frap hats or hockey helmets for the rest.
I'm old for my age.

The trick is buying ski helmets at end-of-season and close-out sales.
