JohnMitchell 16 #3 August 25, 2010 That's been common knowledge for years. If you want a great dog, get a mutt. I had an English Bulldog as a kid. Wonderful dog, but lots of health problems.

So true, but still many people are surprisingly unaware of what you call "common knowledge" (or reluctant to let go of the fact they are not "preserving" any sort of natural breed by buying "purebred".) TriGirl 343 #5 August 25, 2010 My mom got a few schnauzers over the years from a breeder near us. The breeder wasn't too concerned that all of the pups were "perfect" -- she simply sold the ones she couldn't show as pets for a reasonable price, which was a lot of them out of any one litter. As I recall, she only raised one litter about every other year or so. Although the dogs would develop small benign cysts under their coats in their later years (like 15), they were otherwise healthy, happy dogs. It's all about finding someone who REALLY cares about the breed, not just about the "perfection" of the line. Of course, mutts/pound dogs/rescues make AWESOME best pals, too!
