BillyVance 35 #2 September 21, 2010 I think the old jailhouse was featured in one of the ghost-hunters' TV shows. Other than that, I know nothing except that it's the oldest continually inhabited town in north america."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
ManagingPrime 0 #3 September 21, 2010 Castillo De San Marcos is pretty cool and the whole area around it. Find a place to park and just start walking. St. Augustine is very cool.
Amazon 7 #4 September 21, 2010 Quote Suggestions???? I can't jump right now, so don't suggest DeLand or Palatka. Go check out the Castillo de San Marcos... one of the oldest forts in our country. Then for lunch.. the Columbia restaurant.. GREAT food... strolling thru the old city which is claimed to be the oldest in theUS from the 1500's, is educational... especially before the toursit season starts. OH and if you are REALLLLLY touristing it out... there is always the Fountain of Youth...or go check out the snapper farm.... its one of the oldest of its kind in FL
wmw999 2,589 #5 September 21, 2010 Lots of old houses to look at, and the oldest schoolhouse (that was pretty cool, too). Take a tour of Flagler College -- it was originally a super high-end hotel at the turn of the last century, now it's a college. d_squared431 0 #6 September 21, 2010 There are many things to do in there. A variety of tours, the pirate ship, the Ripley's museum, are only a few things. There are little gocart cars you can rent for the day and drive like a maniac down the street. No, I have not done the little cars but i hear it is fun...When are you going to be in St Augustine? That will make a difference when planning activities. skybytch 273 #7 September 21, 2010 Go for a carriage ride. Seriously. Jack and Lynn took me on two of them there and it was so much fun! The first time we ended up getting soaked in a thunderstorm, the second time Molly got to go with us. Both drivers were awesome, funny and full of info. Well worth it, and I'm cheap. Check out the Gypsy Cab and the Conch House for sure. 6) Deep Sea Fishing"If this post needs to be moderated I would prefer it to be completly removed and not edited and butchered into a disney movie" - DorkZone Hero
lauraliscious 0 #12 September 21, 2010 Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I'll be there this weekend and I'll definitely have to check some of that stuff out. I'm definitely interested in the historic aspects of the town and I don't mind playing tourist. I especially appreciate the suggestions of where to eat, I do love good food. Then you definitely need to go to the Columbia. Its been there a hundred years... its in the historic section of town.. and as I said.. GREAT food. Whenever I visit the family just up the road in Jax Beach... my aunt and cousin we always have to go do lunch at the Columbia. I remember going there for lunch when I was a little kid in the 1950's and we were spending the day playing at the Castillo. I was just there last spring and again for the umteenth time with the family off to St Augustine for lunch. Seafood....mmmmm.. devil crab croquettes....mmmmmm.. Spanish Bean soup.....with garbonzo beans, chirizo and ham.. damn near a meal in itself.

skymama 37 #19 September 22, 2010 Quote John Wright, Normiss, or SkyMama might know. I don't know, I've never been there. I am also a fan of the Columbian restaurant, it's just too bad Laura can't try the Sangria. For a day of sightseeing fun, the Fort, Ripley's, shopping in Old Towne and the carriage ride get a thumbs up from me. I also had fun on the Ghost Tour that they have at night. Flagler College is lovely (my son went to college there last year). They have the largest collection of Tiffany glass in the US in their Dining Room, but they don't let the tour groups go in there because the students are there. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
