Main Lift Webbing - less than 14"?

I've never seen one come through < 14". And with 14" there is barely room for handles. In fact most are fitted with a smaller D-ring.

This is a good question.

The Reflex I sold Rosa had a pocket for the D-ring sewn to the back of the MLW this way it was still a full sized D-ring. From the chest strap to the hip rings there definately wasn't much room for the handles.

Perhaps you should spell out what "MLW" means, for those who might not recognize the abbreviation. And also detail how that length is measured: from the hip joint? Upward to what?

Thank you. :)
As for measuring, does measuring differ between manufactures?

I am asking, because I bought a custom rig. It has a "14" MLW", but many have commented that it is too long.

Where is it usual measured?

{I am trying to get to my wonderful gear dealer, but I have been sick for a week.}

The rig I sold to Rosa had a 14 inch MLW, my current rig has a 15 inch MLW so it's of no help.

Kelli, I am getting a rig, that is custom-made much smaller to fit me, because I have also been shown that the 14" MLW of this Reflex is much too long for my torso. See the poor fit of the rig in the attached picture? The hip-rings go to my thighs when I am belly flying, and it's totally dangerous to FF in this. I have tried on a 13" Javelin (on the ground) in Rantoul, which seemed just about right, unless there is a smaller one out there. My torso is VERY short, and I agree that there is almost no room for handles, esp. given my breast size. [:/]

Wow girl, that does look bad. Although my Mirage when belly flying will do the same thing, but not as bad. I always use butt bungee to keep the leg straps where they are supposed to be. I have thin theighs and am a little to flexible. Rig manufactures just need to learn how to design rigs for chicks with hips and thin legs. :S

I'll post a picture when I get home to show you, I don't have any here at work.

Kelli, I DO have a bungee on the leg straps in this picture. I am also wearing a full, thick lead belt, which is adding girth to my hip/waist area, and my arch is not over-extended at all (for me) in this picture. The problem is NOT that I have hips and thin thighs. I actually have NO FREAKING HIPS (my pant size is 24" or 0) and my thighs are not as thin as you may think. Seriously, the problem is the MLW length is too long, the lateral straps are set way too wide for my narrow hips/torso and the leg straps are too long. I've taken the rig to several riggers who all say to basically get a new rig. At least, the narrow yoke is nice & snug, and the rig has been "stepped up" so the container is less long on me (yet, still long on my body). All due to your alterations on it for yourself! :)

I have an Odyssey that is 13.". I had to have the container rotated further back on the harness (even without the yoke it was digging into my neck). But other than that it fits great. I have the low profile reserve handle and have never had a problem there.

I have a Racer 2K3 that is a S-1. Not sure what the correlates to in inches. I have a full length (low profile) reserve handle and was told there was not an extra room left over.

I think they have sizes as small as an XS-1 on the order form for the Racers.

That is what my container is going to be...13" Odyssey. :)

I have a 13" Odyssey. It fits perfectly and is extremely comfortable.

I couldn't get chest rings because there wasn't room and I have smaller than normal handles.

You're going to love yours! When I got mine it was the first time I ever jumped a rig that actually fit. You won't believe the difference.

Nothing wrong with your breast size... :$

I wonder what is the most "extreme size" rig put together, with small MLW and large container (for big canopies). What would be the compatibility. I guess these 13'' are not "very" compatible with containers for like 190 sqft canopies...

My old Mirage is a 14-1 which makes it a 13" and my Odyssey is a 13. No leftover room anywhere but generally confy on me. I can't imagine what you tiny people do as my rig sometimes slips to my knees while arching.

Rosa, please consider putting a connector between your leg straps in the mean time! Even if you just tie a pull-up cord holding your leg straps together.

They did this to a petite female at Santa Rosa recently - seemed to work. It was actually for the rig I own now, which is probably a tad big for me, but within reasonableness since my thighs are definitely bigger than for the petite female.

Thanks for bringing up "Lift Webbing". There was some letter in Parachutist recently IRC about banning "adjustable main lift webbing" and I was wondering what the hell they were talking about and what the hell "adjustable main lift webbing" is.

Two Service Bulletins were issued last year for adjustable Main Lift Webbing (the strap thing connecting your hip joint to your 3-rings). Adjustable MLWs are common on student harnesses, but rare on sport gear.
The first SB was issued by Sun Path and said that all Student Javelins with adjustable MLWs had to be inspected for fraying. Seriously frayed webbing had to replaced by the factory or an FAA Master Rigger. I replaced frayed MLWs on 22 Student Javelins this past winter.

The second SB was issued by Jump Shack and said that any Student Racer with a single-layer, adjustable MLW was down-graded to round reserves only. They are afraid that a hard opening on a Spectra-line square reserve might break the MLW. Hint: Jump Shack last built that configuration 8 years ago. In other words, Jump Shack would like to see oldest student rigs retired.

"The smallest Javelin we have built was a O 13." said Dave Singer from Sun Path.
"O" defines the size of the yoke: the distance from the top of the reserve - over your shoulders - to the 3-ring. "A" sized yokes are popular with small women. Most medium-sized guys wear "B" or "C" - sized Javelins while "D" are reserved for football players.
"!# defines the length of the Main Lift Web (the distance between the 3-rings and the hip joint).
For example, medium-sized guys wear 18 inch MLWs.
